Chairperson Marks called the meeting to order at 9:35 A.M. 2. Acting Director Richard Peterson administered the oath of office to Dr. Herman Viola for a four-year term in the position specially qualified in American history. 3. The minutes of the June 2, 2014, July 8, 2014 and July 22, 2014 meetings were unanimously approved. 4. April Stafford of the United States Mint presented the candidate designs for the 2015 and 2016 First Spouse Program. 5. After each member of the Committee had commented on the candidate designs, members rated the designs by assigning 0, 1, 2, or 3 points to each, with higher points reflecting more favorable evaluations. With eleven (11) members voting, the maximum possible point total was thirty-three (33). By Committee rule, a majority of the maximum possible point total (i.e. 17) was required to garner the Committee’s recommendation. The following motion was acted upon by the Committee: • Motion by Ms. Stevens-Sollman, seconded by Mr. Jansen, that design FSLJ-O-05 is recommended for the obverse of the Lady Bird Johnson coin and medal. The motion passed with eight (8) ayes, two (2) nays and one (1) abstention. 7. April Stafford of the United States Mint presented the candidate reverse designs for the 2016 America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The subjects for these designs included Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in Kentucky, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia, Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota and Fort Moultrie at Fort Sumter National Monument in South Carolina. Representatives of these national places provided comments on their respective locations. They included Amanda Patrick, Public Affairs Officer, Shawnee National Forest (telephonic); Carol Borneman, Chief of Interpretation, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park; Autumn Cook, Web Manager and Social Media Specialist, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park; Valerie Nayor, Superintendent, and Eileen Andes, Chief of Interpretation, Public Affairs, Theodore Roosevelt National Park (telephonic); and Tim Stone, Superintendent, Fort Sumter National Monument. 8. April Stafford of the United States Mint presented the candidate designs for the Lake Superior Band of the Fond du Lac Chippewa Code Talkers Recognition Congressional Gold Medal. 10. The following motions were acted upon by the Committee: • Motion by Mr. Scarinci, seconded by Mr. Bugeja, that obverse design Fond du Lac-O-01 and reverse design Fond du Lac-R-01 are recommended for the designs of the Fond du Lac Congressional Gold Medal. The motion was passed unanimously. • Motion by Ms. Wastweet, seconded by Mr. Jansen, that it is recommended that the Committee’s recommended design for the reverse of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park Quarter Dollar be modified to show Theodore Roosevelt’s complete head rather than the truncated version presented to the Committee. The motion was passed unanimously. 11. April Stafford of the United States Mint presented the candidate designs for the World War II Members of the Civil Air Patrol Congressional Gold Medal. 12. After each member of the Committee had commented on the candidate designs, members rated the designs by assigning 0, 1, 2, or 3 points to each, with higher points reflecting more favorable evaluations. The motion passed unanimously. 14. There being no further business on the September 23rd agenda, Chairperson Marks recessed the meeting at 4:39 p.m. to be reconvened at 9:00 a.m. the following day.
