September 19, 2016 The Honorable Jacob J. Lew Secretary of the Treasury Department of the Treasury 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington D.C. 20220 Dear Secretary Lew: A public meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (Committee) was held on Friday, September 16, 2016, at the United States Mint headquarters in Washington DC. The Committee reviewed and discussed proposed designs for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 American Eagle Platinum Proof Program, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This new threeyear series will depict an American artist’s interpretation of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Artists were tasked with submitting obverse designs for all three years in order to create a harmonious expression of these principles. Artists also submitted reverse designs, which allowed the Committee to pair the most highly-rated design with any obverse set. The obverse designs were recommended from Set 7, each of which featured Lady Liberty in various activities: teaching a small child to sow seeds in a field (2018-07), holding a torch and watching over prairies, lakes and mountains (2019-07) and harvesting the bounty of the fields with a child playing nearby (2020-07). This set of obverse designs received 21 of 24 possible votes. The obverse script - Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness - harkens back to the handwritten Declaration of Independence. The highest ranked reverse, with 24 votes of a possible 24, was a majestic swooping eagle (rev-09). Our Committee is honored to recommend these designs for the latest series of the American Eagle Platinum Proof Program for selection. Sincerely, Mary N. Lannin Chair Established by Act of Congress, Public Law 108-15
