Dear Secretary Lew:
A public meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) was held on Monday,
June 27, 2016 in Colorado Springs, CO to review the proposed obverse and reverse designs for
the Barack Obama Presidential Medal.
By unanimous vote, obverse BO-Tl-0-01, featuring a larger head of President Obama turned
slightly left and paired with the single reverse BO-Tl-R-01, was selected for President Obama’s
First Term Presidential Medal. The reverse features the Great Seal and is inscribed “Our Destiny
Is Not Written For Us, It Is Written By Us”, with the date January 20, 2009.
In the same vote, the traditional left-facing profile obverse of President Obama BO-T2-0-0l
paired with the reverse BO-T2-R-02 was selected for President Obama’s second term
Presidential Medal. This second reverse positions the phrases “We the People”, “We Shall
Overcome” and “Yes We Can” encircled in the lower half of the medal, and provides a pleasing
overall balance to the medal, with the White House in the upper half. Underneath the White
House is the date January 20, 2013.
Our Committee was honored to vote on these designs.
Best regards, I am
