Dear Secretary Lew:
A public meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (Committee) was held on
Tuesday, July 24, 2013, at United States Mint Headquarters in Washington, DC. The
Committee reviewed proposed obverse and reverse designs for Code Talkers Congressional
Gold Medals for the Pueblo of Acoma Tribe, Hopi Tribe, Oneida Nation, Ponca Tribe, Tonto
Apache Tribe, and White Mountain Apache Tribe.
For the medal honoring the Pueblo of Acoma Tribe Code Talkers, the Committee
recommended Obverse 01. The design received 28 of the possible 30 scoring points through
the Committee’s design evaluation process. Reverse 03 received a perfect score of 30 points
through the evaluation process and is, therefore, strongly recommended by the Committee.
The Committee assigned 29 of the possible 30 scoring points to Obverse 03 for the Hopi Tribe
Code Talkers and is, therefore, strongly recommended for this medal. Reverse 01 for the Hopi
Tribe Code Talkers received the Committee’s recommendation by accumulating 28 of the
possible 30 scoring points through the evaluation process.
Obverse 03 for the medal honoring the Oneida Nation Code Talkers received a perfect
evaluation score of 30 and carries the Committee’s strongest possible recommendation. For
the reverse, the Committee strongly recommends Reverse 01. This design also received a
perfect score of 30. The Committee subsequently recommended that the oval appearing in the
lower middle area of Reverse 01 be removed to provide a cleaner design.
The Committee recommends Obverse 04 for the medal honoring Ponca Tribe Code Talkers.
This design received 29 of the possible 30 scoring points. Reverse 01 for the Ponca Tribe
Code Talkers received the Committee’s strongest possible recommendation after garnering a
perfect score of 30.
For the medal honoring the Tonto Apache Tribe Code Talkers, the Committee recommended
Obverse 01 after it received 29 of the possible 30 scoring points. For the reverse of the Tonto
Apache Tribe medal, the Committee recommends Reverse 01. This design accumulated 23 of
the possible 30 scoring points.

The Committee assigned 28 of the possible 30 scoring points to Obverse 01 for the medal
honoring the White Mountain Apache Tribe Code Talkers thereby giving it the Committee’s
recommendation. Reverse 01 for the White Mountain Apache Code Talkers received the
Committee’s strongest possible recommendation by accumulating a perfect score of 30 through
the evaluation process.
Sincerely,

Gary B. Marks
