In F ebruary, the goods d eficit d ec reased $3.5 billio n
fro m Ja n u ary to $70.1 billion, an d th e services surplus
decreased $0.6 b illio n to $4.3 b illion. E xports o f goods
d ec reased $1.1 b illio n to $80.5 b illion, an d im ports o f goods
d ec reased $4.6 b illio n to $ 150.5 billio n . E xports o f services
d ec reased $0.2 b illio n to $32.5 b illion, an d im ports o f
services in creased $0.4 b illio n to $28.2 billion.
In February, the goods and services deficit was up $5.6
billion from February 2005. Exports w ere up $11.7 billion, or
11.5 percent, and im ports w ere up $17.3 billion, or 10.7
percent.

The February 2005 to February 2006 change in exports o f
goods reflected increases in ca p ita l goods ($4.9 billion); in d u stria l
supplies and m aterials ($2.1 billion); autom otive vehicles, parts,
and engines ($1.2 billion); consum er goods ($0.9 billion);/oocfc,
feeds, and beverages ($0.5 billion); and othe r goods ($0.4 billion).
The February 2005 to February 2006 change in im ports o f
goods reflected increases in in d u s tria l supplies and m aterials
($10.2 billion); c a p ita l goods ($2.7 billion); autom otive vehicles,
parts, and engines ($1.6 billion )■,foods, feeds, and beverages ($0.6
billion); and other goods ($0.5 billion). A decrease occurred in
consum er goods ($0.1 billion).
S e r v ic e s

Services exports decreased $0.2 billion from January to
February. The decrease reflected decreases in tra v e l ($0.2 billion)
and othe r transportation, w hich includes freight and p o rt services
($0.1 billion). Changes in other categories o f services exports
w ere small.

Services im ports increased $0.4 billion from January to
February. R oyalties and license fees increased $0.6 billion; it
includes payments for the rights to broadcast the 2006 W inter
O lym pic Games. O ther transportation decreased $0.2 billion and
tra ve l decreased $0.1 billion. Changes in other categories o f
services im ports were small.

The F ebruary figures show ed surpluses, in billions o f dollars,
w ith A ustralia $0.7 ($0.9 for January), H ong K ong $0.6 ($0.5),
Singapore $0.5 ($0.3), and Egypt $0.1 ($0.1). D eficits were
recorded, in billions o f dollars, w ith C hina $13.8 ($17.9), Europe
$9.8 ($11.7), the European U nion $8.3 ($9.7), O PEC $7.3 ($8.4),
C anada $7.2 ($8.9), Japan $7.1 ($6.5), M exico $4.7 ($4.6), K orea
$1.2 ($1.3), Taiw an $1.0 ($1.6), and B razil $0.6 ($0.6).

F rom February 2005 to F ebruary 2006, services exports
increased $1.8 billion. The largest increases w ere in other p riva te
services, w hich includes item s such as business, professional, and
technical services, insurance services, and financial services ($1.0
billion), other transportation ($0.5 billion), and travel ($0.4
billion).

A dvanced technology products (ATP) exports w ere $18.4
billio n in February and im ports w ere $19.8 billion, resulting in a
deficit o f $ 1.4 billion. February exports w ere $0.1 b illion more
than th e $18.3 billion in January, w hile im ports w ere $1.9 billion
less than the $21.7 billion in January.
R e v is io n s

F rom February 2005 to February 2006, services imports
increased $1.9 billion. The largest increases w ere in other p riva te
services ($1.0 billion) and royalties and licensefees ($0.6 billion).
G o o d s a n d S e r v ic e s M o v in g A v e r a g e

F or the three m onths ending in February, exports o f goods and
services averaged $113.0 billion, w hile im ports o f goods and
services averaged $179.4 billion, resulting in an average trade
deficit o f $66.5 billion. F or the three m onths ending in January,
the average trade deficit w as $66.0 billion, reflecting average
exports o f $111.7 billion and average im ports o f $177.7 billion.

G oods carry-over in February w as $0.4 billion (0.5 percent) for
exports and $1.2 billion (0.9 percent) for imports. F or January,
revised export carry-over w as $0.2 billion (0.3 percent), revised
dow n from $0.5 billion (0.7 percent). F o r January, revised import
carry-over w as $0.2 billion (0.1 percent), revised dow n from $1.0
billion (0.7 percent).
Services exports for January w ere revised up $0.1 billion to
$32.7 billion. The revision w as m ostly accounted for by upw ard
revisions in tra v e l and passenger fa re s . Services im ports for
January w ere virtually unchanged at $27.8 billion.
