D e f in itio n s
P e r s o n a l in c o m e is the income received by all persons from all sources. Personal
income is the sum o f net earnings by place o f residence, rental income o f persons, personal
dividend income, personal interest income, and personal current transfer receipts. N e t e a r n in g s
is earnings by place o f work (the sum o f wage and salary disbursements (payrolls), supplements
to wages and salaries, and proprietors’ income) less contributions for government social
insurance, plus an adjustment to convert earnings by place o f work to a place-of-residence basis.
Personal income is measured before the deduction o f personal income taxes and other personal
taxes and is reported in current dollars (no adjustment is made for price changes).

The estimate o f personal income in the United States is derived as the sum o f the state
estimates; it differs from the estim ate o f personal income in the national income and product
accounts (NIPAs) because o f differences in coverage, in the methodologies used to prepare the
estimates, and in the timing o f the availability o f source data.
BEA groups all 50 states and the District o f Columbia into eight distinct regions for
purposes o f data collecting and analyses: N e w E n g la n d (Connecticut, Maine, M assachusetts,
New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont); M id e a s t (Delaware, District o f Columbia,
Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania); G r e a t L a k e s (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
Ohio, and Wisconsin); P la in s (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and
South Dakota); S o u t h e a s t (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia);
S o u th w e s t (Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas); R o c k y M o u n t a in (Colorado, Idaho,
Montana, Utah, and Wyoming); and F a r W e s t (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon,
and Washington).
B EA ’s national, international, regional, and industry estimates; the S u r v e y o f C u r r e n t
