THURSDAY June 7, 2007 STATE ECONOMIC GROWTH WIDESPREAD IN 2006 Advance Estimates of GDP by State Newly available data on the state distribution of real GDP growth confirm that economic growth was widespread in 2006, as GDP grew in all states except Michigan, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Growth accelerated for the nation and most states compared with 2005. The ten fastest-growing states are all in three western regions—Rocky Mountain, Southwest or Far West. This release provides NAICS-sector estimates only 6 months after the calendar year for the first time—a 4month acceleration from previous release schedules. It completes the acceleration of the GDP-by-state estimates. 2006 Per Capita Real GDP by State State Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware District of Columbia Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Dollars 29,697 43,748 33,441 27,875 41,663 41,798 50,332 59,288 124,363 33,718 35,362 38,083 30,896 39,514 34,058 35,662 34,242 Rank 44 6 36 48 9 7 2 1 -34 26 16 41 13 33 24 32 State Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina Dollars 29,842 32,923 30,305 39,161 46,721 33,468 41,295 24,062 33,297 27,942 36,441 39,813 37,666 44,885 31,986 46,617 36,489 Rank 43 38 42 14 3 35 10 50 37 47 21 11 17 5 40 4 20 State North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming Dollars 34,446 34,609 29,545 37,633 34,828 36,292 29,642 35,842 34,321 36,920 32,357 34,472 41,702 39,616 24,748 35,390 39,130 Rank 30 28 46 18 27 22 45 23 31 19 39 29 8 12 49 25 15 BEA data—including GDP, personal income, the balance of payments, foreign direct investment, the input-output accounts, and economic data for states, local areas, and industries—are available on the BEA Web site: www.bea.gov.
