G D P b y state grew 3.6 percent in 2005, com pared w ith the 1 9 9 7 -2 0 0 4 average annual grow th rate o f 3.1 percent (chart 2). A s o f this release, the B u reau o f E conom ic A nalysis (B E A ) is changing the nam e o f its gross state p ro d u ct (G SP) series to gross dom estic p ro d u ct (G D P) b y state. T his series, as o f the D ecem ber 2004 com prehensive revision, is consistent w ith the national m easure o f G D P. The n ew nam e, G D P b y state, is also consistent w ith term inology u sed b y statistical agencies in m o st other developed countries. C h a r t 2. G row th in private services-providing industries slightly outpaced grow th in p riv ate goodspro d u cin g industries (5.7 percent to 5.0 percen t in the S outhw est region, 5.7 percen t to 5.3 p ercen t in the R o ck y M ountain region). W ith in the Southw est, A rizo n a p o sted the strongest grow th (9.1 percent)— the fastest in the N atio n (chart 3). T he o n ly state in the R o ck y M ountain and Southw est regions w ith slow er g row th th an the N atio n w as O klahom a (3.3 percent). T he G reat Lakes region experienced the slow est grow th in 2005 (1.3 percent). B u r e a u o f E c o n o m ic A n a l y s i s N A I C S I n d u s tr y S e c to r s 2 T he tw o N A IC S sectors w ith the largest contributions to g row th w ere finance and insurance, and p ro fessio n al and technical services, w h ich to g eth er contributed m ore th an 28 percen t to real U .S. grow th. Finance and insurance grew 6.7 percen t in 2005 and p ro fessio n al and technical services grew 7.0 percent. In the 8 B E A regions, the contrib u tio n s to real G D P-by-state grow th from these tw o sectors ranged from a high o f 47 percen t in the G reat Lakes to a low o f 21 percen t in the Southw est. O ne o f th ese tw o sectors w as the largest co n trib u to r to grow th in 19 states. In addition to th e strong g row th in p riv ate services-providing industries, the m an u factu rin g secto r co ntinued its strong U .S. grow th, increasing 4.0 percent. In the S outhw est and F ar W est regions, durable goods m anufacturing contributed the m o st to real G D P -by-state grow th o f the in d u stry sectors in T able 2. D urable goods m an u factu rin g w as the largest co ntributor to g row th in 10 states. 2 N A I C S N o r t h A m e r ic a n I n d u s t r y C la s s if ic a t io n S y s t e m 3 R e v is io n s T he revisions to the advance G D P-by-state estim ates fo r 2005, released in June 2006, are due to the incorporation o f farm incom e and expense data from the U .S. D epartm ent o f A griculture (U SD A ) and the incorporation o f rev ised B E A eam ings-by-industry data. T he grow th rate in real G D P b y state fo r th e N ew E ngland region w as rev ised dow n 0.7 percentage point. T he g row th rates o f real G D P b y state for the S outheast and S outhw est regions w ere each revised up 0.3 percentage point. In N ew E ngland, the tw o states w ith th e largest dow nw ard revisions w ere N ew H am pshire (1.2 p ercen tag e points) and M assachusetts (0.9 p ercentage point). In the Southeast, th e grow th rates for A labam a, M ississippi, and T ennessee w ere revised up b y m ore than 1.0 percentage point. In June 2006, B E A released advance 2005 G D P-by-state totals. T his release p rovides rev ised 2005 G D P-bystate totals, plus b o th current-dollar and real 2005 G D P-by-state estim ates b y N A IC S sectors. T hese accelerated industry estim ates fo r 2005 are b ased on an abbreviated estim ation m eth o d o lo g y u sin g lim ited state source data. T he accelerated 2005 estim ates are based on B E A earnings b y industry estim ates released Septem ber 26, 2006 and o n the accelerated U .S. G D P b y industry estim ates released A pril 27, 2006. In addition, farm in co m e and expense data from the U S D A are incorporated into the agriculture, forestry, fishing, and h u n tin g industry. M o re inform ation on the m eth o d o lo g y used to pro d u ce th e advance 2005 estim ates, on the reg u lar (revised) G D P-by-state estim ates for 1 9 9 8 -2 0 0 4 , and on revisions to the G D P-bystate estim ates can be found in th e Ju ly 2006 issue o f the S u r v e y o f C u r r e n t B u s i n e s s , B E A ’s m o n th ly jo u rn al. 4 E x p la n a to r y N o te s D e fin itio n s G D P b y state is the state counterpart o f the N a tio n ’s gross dom estic p ro d u ct (G D P), the B u re au ’s featured and m o st com prehensive m easure o f U .S. econom ic activity. G D P b y state is derived as the sum o f the G D P o riginating in all the industries in the state. R eal G D P b y state is an in flation-adjusted m easure b ased on national prices for th e goods and services p ro duced w ith in that state. T he estim ates o f real G D P b y state and o f quantity indexes w ith a base year o f 2000 are derived b y applying national im plicit price deflators to the cu rren t-d o llar G D P-by-state estim ates fo r the 81 N A IC S industries for years 1997 forw ard and for th e 63 SIC industries fo r years 1 9 7 7 -1 9 9 7 . Then, the chain-type index form ula that is u sed in th e n atio n al accounts is u sed to calculate th e estim ates o f total real G D P b y state and o f real G D P b y state at m ore aggregated industry levels. T h e r e la tio n o f G D P b y s ta te to U .S . G r o ss D o m e s tic P r o d u c t (G D P ) A n industry's G D P b y state, o r its v alu e added, in p ractice, is calculated as th e sum o f incom es earned b y labor and capital and the costs incurred in the pro d u ctio n o f goods and services. T hat is, it includes the w ages and salaries that w orkers earn, the incom e earned by individual o r jo in t entrepreneurs as w ell as b y corporations, and b usiness taxes such as sales, property, and Federal excise taxes— th at co u n t as a b usiness expense. G D P is calculated as the sum o f w h at consum ers, businesses, and governm ent spend on final goods and services, p lu s investm ent and n et foreign trade. In theory, incom es earned should equal w h at is spent, b u t due to different d ata sources, incom e earned, u su ally referred to as gross dom estic incom e (G D I) does n o t alw ays equal w h at is spent (G D P). T he difference is referred to as the “ statistical discrepancy.” S tarting w ith the 2004 com prehensive revision, B E A ’s in d u stry accounts and its G D P-bystate accounts allocate the statistical d iscrep an cy across all priv ate-secto r industries. T herefore, G D P -by-state estim ates are now concep tu ally m ore sim ilar to G D P estim ates in the natio n al accounts th an th ey h ad been in the past. E x cep t for sm all differences resu ltin g from th e G D P-by-state accounts excluding overseas F ederal m ilitary and civilian activity (because it can n o t be attributed to a p articu lar state), grow th rates o f real G D P b y state and real U .S.
