These estim ates are from the Travel and Tourism Satellite Accounts (TTSAs), which are
supported by funding from the Office o f Travel and Tourism Industries, International Trade
A dm inistration, U.S. Departm ent o f Commerce. The current-price estim ates o f direct tourism output
were derived from B E A ’s annual TTSAs (revised in June 2006) and current-dollar quarterly estimates
o f personal consum ption expenditures from the NIP As. The constant-price estimates o f direct tourism
output were developed using price indexes from the Bureau o f Labor Statistics (BLS), constant-price
quarterly estim ates o f personal consumption expenditures from the NIP As, and air transportation data
from the Bureau o f Transportation Statistics. The estimates o f direct tourism em ploym ent were
derived from the annual TTSAs (revised in June 2006) and the Quarterly Census o f Em ploym ent and
W ages from BLS. The annual TTSAs (revised in June 2006) are, in turn, derived from B E A ’s annual
input-output accounts (revised in December 2005). The June 2006 issue o f the S u r v e y o f C u r r e n t
B u s in e s s will include an article describing the revised annual TTSA estim ates in detail.
B E A ’s estim ates o f total tourism -related output include figures for both “direct” and “indirect”
sales. D irect tourism -related output comprise all output consumed directly by visitors (e.g,, traveler
accom m odations, passenger air transportation, souvenirs); indirect tourism -related output comprise all
output used as inputs in the process o f producing direct tourism-related output (e.g., toiletries for hotel
guests, the various ingredients used to m ake the meals served airline passengers, and the plastic used
to produce souvenir key chains). Indirect output was estimated using comm odity-by-com m odity
output multipliers from the Current Industry Analysis Division.
B E A ’s estim ates o f tourism -related employment measure both “direct” and “indirect”
employment. Direct tourism -related employm ent comprises all jobs where the workers are engaged in
the production o f direct tourism -related output (e.g., hotel staff, airline pilots, and souvenir sellers);
indirect tourism -related em ploym ent comprises all jobs where the workers are engaged in the
production o f indirect tourism -related output (e.g., employees o f companies that produce toiletries for
hotel guests, the various ingredients used to make the meals served airline passengers, and the plastic
used to produce souvenir key chains). Indirect em ploym ent was estimated using industry-by-industry
em ploym ent m ultipliers from the Regional Econom ic Analysis Division. Em ploym ent data are
available five to six months after the end o f the reference quarter.
