TUESDAY April 25, 2006 LOCAL AREA PERSONAL INCOME, 2004 Personal income grew faster in 2004 than in 2003 in most of the nation’s metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), according to estimates released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Fewer than one in six MSAs grew slower in 2004 than in the previous year. Most of these slower growing MSAs are in the Great Lakes Region and have a relatively large motor vehicle manufacturing sector. Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut continued to have the highest per capita income of all metropolitan areas in 2004. The average income of $62,979 was 90.6 percent above the national average of $33,050. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas continued to have the lowest per capita income of all metropolitan areas. Its average income of $15,460 was less than half of the national average. The difference in income between the highest and lowest income areas widened in 2004 as per capita income in all but one of the top ten MSAs grew faster than the national average while per capita income in all but one of the bottom five MSAs grew slower than the national average.
