The rest-o f-th e-w o rld co m ponent o f profits decreased $5.3 b illio n in the third quarter, in contrast
to an increase o f $13.8 b illio n in the second. This m easure is calculated as (1) receipts by U .S. residents
o f earnings fro m th eir fo reig n affiliates plus dividends received by U .S. resid en ts from unaffiliated
foreign corporations m inus (2) paym ents by U .S. affiliates o f earnings to th e ir foreign parents plus
dividends paid by U .S. corporations to unaffiliated foreign residents. T he th ird -q u arter decrease was
accounted for b y a sm aller increase in receipts th an in paym ents.
Profits before tax w ith inventory valu atio n adjustm ent is the b est available m easure o f industry
profits because estim ates o f th e capital consum ption adjustm ent by in d u stry do no t exist. This m easure
reflects d ep reciation-accounting practices used for federal incom e tax returns. A ccording to this
m easure, dom estic profits o f financial corporations decreased, w hile dom estic profits o f nonfinancial
corporations increased. The increase in nonfinancial corporations p rim arily reflected increases in
m anufacturing, in w h o lesale trade, in retail trade, and in utilities th at w ere p artly offset by decreases in
“other” nonfinancial industries and in inform ation. W ithin m anufacturing, th e increase reflected
increases in all the industries show n ex cep t chem ical products and “o th er” nondurable goods; the largest
increase w as in “o th er” durable goods.
Profits b efore tax increased $42.5 billio n in the th ird quarter, co m p ared w ith an increase o f $70.9
billion in the second. T he b efore-tax m easure o f profits does not reflect, as does profits from current
production, the capital con su m p tio n and inventory valuation adjustm ents. These adjustm ents convert
depreciation o f fixed assets and inventory w ithdraw als reported on a tax -retu rn , h istorical-cost basis to
the current-cost m easures u sed in the national incom e and p ro d u ct accounts. T he capital consum ption
adjustm ent decreased $1.6 b illio n in the third quarter (from -$160.8 b illio n to -$162.4 billion), com pared
w ith a decrease o f $12.2 b illio n in the second. The inventory v alu atio n ad ju stm en t increased $20.7
billion (from -$58.9 billio n to -$38.2 billion), in contrast to a decrease o f $36.0 billion.
Effective w ith this release, chained-dollar gross value added o f n o n fin an cial corporate business
w as revised b eg in n in g w ith 2003. T he current-dollar gross value added is d eflated by a revised chaintype price index calcu lated u sin g the gross value added chain-type index fo r nonfinancial industries from
the annual rev isio n o f the G D P -by-industry accounts.
