Real gross dom estic p ro d u ct - the output o f goods and services p ro d u ced by labor and property
located in the U nited States — increased at an annual rate o f 2.6 p ercen t in th e second quarter o f 2006,
according to final estim ates released by th e B ureau o f Econom ic A nalysis. In the first quarter, real GDP
increased 5.6 percent.
The GDP estim ates released today are based on m ore com plete source data th an w ere available for
the prelim inary estim ates issued last m onth. In the prelim inary estim ates, th e increase in real GDP was
2.9 percent (see "R evisions" on p ag e 3).
The increase in real G D P in the second quarter prim arily reflected p o sitiv e contributions from
personal consum ption expenditures (PCE) for services, exports, n o n resid en tial structures, state and local
governm ent spending, and private inventory investm ent that w ere p artly o ffset by negative contributions
from residential fixed investm ent and federal governm ent spending. Im ports, w hich are a subtraction in
the calculation o f G D P, increased.
The deceleration in real G D P grow th in the second q uarter p rim arily reflected dow nturns in PC E
for durable goods, in equipm ent and softw are, and in federal go v ern m en t spending, decelerations in PC E
fo r nondurable goods and in exports, and a larger decrease in resid en tial fix ed investm ent that w ere
partly offset by a d eceleration in im ports, an acceleration in P C E fo r services, and an upturn in private
inventory investm ent.

N O T E .-Q u a rte rly estim ates are expressed at seasonally adjusted annual rates, unless otherw ise
specified. Q uarter-to-quarter dollar changes are differences b etw een th ese p u b lish ed estim ates. Percent
changes are calculated from unrounded data and are annualized. “R e a l” estim ates are in chained (2000)
dollars. Prices indexes are chain-type m easures.
