Current-dollar value added of MOUSAs, a measure of their direct contribution to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), increased 8.4 percent to $1.1 trillion. Expenditures for property, plant, and equipment by MOUSAs increased 4.0 percent to $277.4 billion. Research and development (R&D) performed by MOUSAs increased 6.6 percent to $66.9 billion. By state, private-industry employment accounted for by MOUSAs was highest in South Carolina (8.8 percent), Kentucky (8.4 percent), and Michigan (8.2 percent).
