Scope and Method of Survey In each o f the 7 5 1 areas cu rren tly surveyed, the Bureau obtains w ages and related b en efits data from represen tative establish m en ts within six broad industry d iv isio n s: M anufacturing; transportation, com m unication, and other public u tilitie s ; w h o lesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance, and r e a l esta te; and s e r v ic e s . G overnm ent operations and the construction and ex tra ctiv e in d u stries are excluded. Establishm ents having few er than a p r e s c r ib e d num ber of w o rk ers are also excluded becau se of insufficient em p loym en t in the occupations studied. Appendix table 1 shows the number of e sta b lish m en ts and w o rk ers estim ated to be within the scope of this su rvey, as w e ll as the num ber actually studied. B u reau fie ld rep rese n ta tiv es obtain data by person al visits at 3 - year in te rv a ls . In each o f the two intervening y e a r s, inform ation on em ploym ent and occupational earnings only is collected by a combination of person al v isit, m a il q u estio n n aire, and telephone interview from establishm ents participating in the previou s su rv ey . A sa m p le o f the establish m en ts in the scope of the su rvey is selected fo r study p r io r to each p e rso n a l v isit su rvey. This sa m p le, le s s estab lish m en ts which go out of b u sin e ss or are no longer within the industrial scope of the su rv e y , is retained fo r the follow ing two annual su r v e y s. In m o s t c a s e s , esta b lish m en ts new to the a rea are not con sidered in the scope o f the su rvey until the se le c tio n of a sam ple for a p e rso n al v isit su rvey . The sam p lin g p ro ce d u res involve detailed stratification of all estab lish m en ts within the scop e of an individual area survey by industry and num ber o f e m p lo y e e s . When data are com bined, each esta b lish m en t is w eighted according to its probability of selectio n so that unbiased e s tim a te s are generated. F o r exam ple, if one out of four esta b lish m en ts is se le c te d , it is given a weight of 4 to rep rese n t itse lf plus th ree o th e r s . An alternate o f the sam e original probability is chosen in the sam e in d u s tr y -s iz e c la s s ific a tio n if data are not available fro m the origin al sa m p le m e m b e r . If no suitable substitute is available, additional weight is assign ed to a sa m p le m e m b e r that is sim ila r to the m issin g unit. O ccupations and earnings O ccupations se le c te d fo r study are com m on to a v ariety of m an u fac turing and nonm anufacturing in d u stries, and are of the follow ing typ es; (1) O ffic e c le r ic a l; (2) p ro fe ssio n a l and technical; (3) m aintenance, to o lroo m , 1 Included in the 75 areas are 5 studies conducted by the Bureau under contract. These areas are Akron, Ohio; Birmingham, A la.; Norfolk—Virginia Beach-Portsmouth and Newport News—Hampton, V a.—N .C .; Poughkeepsie-‘-Kingston—Newburgh, N .Y .; and Utica—Rome, N .Y . In addition, the Bureau conducts more lim ited area studies in approximately 100 areas at the request o f the Employment Standards Administration of the U. S. Occupational cla ssific a tio n is based on a uniform set of job description s designed to take account of in terestab lish m en t variation in duties within the sam e job. Occupations selected fo r study are listed and describ ed in appendix B. U n less oth erw ise indicated, the earnings data following the job titles are for all industries com bined. Earnings data for som e of the occupations liste d and d e sc rib ed , or for som e industry divisions within the scope of the su rvey, are not presented in the A - s e r i e s tables because either (1) em ploym ent in the occupation is too sm a ll to provide enough data to m e r it presentation, or (2) th ere is p o ssib ility of d isc lo su re of individual establish m en t data. Separate m e n 's and w o m en 's earnings data are not presented when the number of w o rk ers not identified by sex is 20 percent or m o r e of the m en or w om en identified in an occupation. Earnings data not shown sep arately fo r industry division s are included in data for all industries com bined. L ik e w ise, for occupations with m o r e than one level, data are included in the o v era ll c la ssific a tio n when a su b classification is not shown or inform ation to su b cla ssify is not available. Occupational em ploym ent and earnings data are shown for fu ll-tim e w o r k e r s, i .e ., those hired to w ork a regular w eekly schedule. Earnings data exclude p rem iu m pay fo r o vertim e and for work on weekends, holidays, and late sh ifts. Nonproduction bonuses are excluded, but c o s t-o f-liv in g allow ances and incentive bonuses are included.
