Wage Trends for Selected Occupational Groups
P r e s e n te d in table 2 are indexes and percentages of change
in a vera g e s a la r ie s of o ffic e c l e r i c a l w o r k e r s and industrial nurses,
and in a v e ra g e earnings of selected plant w o r k e r groups. The indexes
are a m e a s u re of wages at a given tim e, exp re s s e d as a percent of
wages during the base period. Subtracting 100 fr o m the index yield s
the percentage change in wages f r o m the base period to the date o f the
index. The p ercen tages of change o r in c r e a s e re la te to wage changes
between the indicated dates. These estim ates are m ea su res of change
in a vera ges fo r the area; they are not intended to m easu re average
pay changes in the establishments in the area.

F o r o ffic e c l e r i c a l w o r k e r s and industrial nurses, the wage
trends relate to regu la r w e e k ly s a la r ie s for the norm al workweek,
exclu sive of earnings for o v e r t im e .
F o r plant w o rk e r groups, they
m easu re changes in a v e r a g e s tra ig h t-tim e hourly earnings, excluding
prem ium pay f o r o v e r t im e and fo r w o rk on weekends, holidays, and
late shifts.
The percentages a r e based on data fo r selected key o c c u
pations and include m ost of the n u m e ric a lly important jobs within
each group.

Lim itation s of Data
Method of Computing
The indexes and percentages of change, as m easu res of
change in a re a a v e r a g e s , a re influenced by:
(1) gen eral s a la r y and
wage changes, (2) m e r i t or other in c re a s e s in pay r e c e iv e d by in d i
vidual w o r k e r s while in the same job, and (3) changes in a v e ra g e
wages due to changes in the labor f o r c e resulting fr o m labor turn
o v e r , f o r c e expansions, f o r c e reductions, and changes in the p r o p o r
tions of w o rk e rs em ployed by establishments with differen t pay le v e ls .
Changes in the labor f o r c e can cause in c re a s e s o r d e c re a s e s in the
occupational a v e r a g e s without actual wage changes.
It is conceivable
that even though a ll establishments in an a rea gave wage in crea ses,
a v e r a g e wages m ay have declin ed because lo w e r-p a y in g establishments
entered the a rea o r expanded their w o rk fo r c e s .
S im ila rly , wages
m ay have rem ained r e la t iv e ly constant, yet the av e ra g e s f o r an area
m ay have ris e n c o n sid era b ly because h ig her-payin g establishments
entered the a rea.

Each of the selected key occupations within an occupational
group was assigned a constant weight based on its proportionate e m
ployment in the occupational group. The average (mean) earnings for
each occupation w e r e m ultiplied by the occupational weight, and the
products fo r all occupations in the group w e r e totaled. The aggregates
for 2 consecutive y e a r s w e re related by dividing the aggregate for
the later ye a r by the a ggregate fo r the e a r l i e r y e a r.
The resultant
r e la tiv e , le s s 100 percent, shows the percentage change. The index
is the product of multiplying the base ye a r r e la tiv e (100) by the r ela tive
fo r the next succeeding y e a r and continuing to multiply (compound)
each y e a r 's r e la tiv e by the previous y e a r 's index. A v e r a g e earnings
fo r the fo llow ing occupations w e r e used in computing the wage trends:
Office clerical (men and women): Office clerical (men and women)— Skilled maintenance (men):

The use of constant em ployment weights elim in ates the effect
of changes in the proportion of w o r k e r s rep resen ted in each job in
cluded in the data.
The percentages of change r e fle c t only changes
in a v e r a g e pay for s tra ig h t-tim e hours.
They a re not influenced by
changes in standard w o rk schedules, as such, or by prem iu m pay
fo r o v e r t im e .
Where n ecessa ry , data w e r e adjusted to r e m o v e fr o m
the indexes and percentages of change any significant e ffe c t caused
by changes in the scope of the survey.
