1 T h e N e w H a v e n Standard Metropolitan Statistical Ar ea , as defined b y the B u r e a u of the B u dg et through J a nu ar y 1968, consists of the city
of N e w Haven; an d the to wn s of Bethany, Branford, Ea s t Ha ve n, Guilford, H a m d e n , No rt h Branford, No rt h Ha ve n, O r an ge , W e s t Ha v e n , and W o o d b r i d g e
in N e w H a v e n County. T h e " w o r k e r s within scope of study" estimates s h o w n in this table provide a reasonably accurate description of the size and
composition of the labor force included in the survey. T h e estimates are not intended, h o we ve r, to serve as a basis of c o m p a r i s o n with other
e m p l o y m e n t indexes for the ar ea to m e a s u r e e m p l o y m e n t trends or levels since (1) planning of w a g e surveys requires the use of establishment data
co mp i l e d considerably in ad va nc e of the payroll period studied, an d (2) small establishments are excluded f r o m the scope of the survey.
2 T h e 1967 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification M a n u a l w a s us e d in classifying establishments b y industry division.
3 Includes all establishments with total e m p l o y m e n t at or above the m i n i m u m limitation. All outlets (within the area) of c o m p a n i e s in such
industries as trade, finance, auto repair service, and mo t i o n picture theaters are considered as 1 establishment.
4 Includes all w o r k e r s in all establishments with total e m p l o y m e n t (within the area) at or above the m i n i m u m limitation.
5 Taxicabs an d services incidental to wa t e r transportation w e r e excluded.
6 This industry division is represented in estimates for "all industries" an d "n onmanufacturing" in the Series A tables. Separate presentation
of data for this division is not m a d e for one or m o r e of the following reasons: (1) E m p l o y m e n t in the division is too small to provide en ou gh data
to me r i t separate study, (2) the s a m p l e w a s not designed initially to pe r m i t separate presentation, (3) resp on se w a s insufficient or inadequate to
p e r m i t separate presentation, an d (4) there is possibility of disclosure of individual establishment data.
7 Hotels an d motels; laundries an d other personal services; business services; automobile repair, rental, an d parking; m o t i o n pictures; nonprofit
m e m b e r s h i p organizations (excluding religious an d charitable organizations); a nd engineering and architectural services.

Ab ou t three-fifths of the w o r k e r s within scope of the su rv ey in the N e w H a v e n area
