Preface T h is bulletin p rovides results o f a July 1974 su rvey of occupational earnings and supplem entary wage benefits in the Corpus C h risti, T e x a s , Standard M etrop olita n S ta tistica l A re a (N ueces and San P a tric io Counties). The su rvey was m ade as p art o f the Bureau of Labor S ta tis tic s ' annual a rea wage su rvey p rogra m . The p ro g ra m is designed to y ie ld data fo r individual m etropolitan a rea s, as w e ll as national and re g io n a l estim ates fo r a ll Standard M etropolitan S ta tistica l A rea s in the United States, excluding A la sk a and H aw aii. A m a jo r consideration in the area wage su rvey p ro g ra m is the need to d e s c rib e the le v e l and m ovem ent o f wages in a v a rie ty of labor m a rk ets, through the an alysis o f (1) the le v e l and distribution of wages by occupation, and (2) the m ovem en t of w ages by occupational ca teg o ry and s k ill le v e l. The p ro g ra m develops in form ation that m ay be used fo r many purposes, including wage and salary adm inistration, c o lle c tiv e b argain in g, and assistan ce in determ ining plant location. Survey results also a re used by the U.S. D epartm ent o f Lab or to m ake wage determ inations under the S ervice C ontract A c t o f 1965. C u rren tly, 79 areas are included in the p ro g ra m . (See lis t o f a reas on inside back c o v e r .) In each area, occupational earnings data a re c o llected annually. In form ation on establishm ent p ra ctices and supplementary w age ben efits is obtained e v e r y third yea r. R esults o f the next two annual su rveys, providin g earnings data only, w ill be issued as fr e e supplements to this bulletin. The supplements m ay be obtained fro m the B ureau's region a l o ffic e s . (See back cover fo r ad d resses.) Each year a fte r a ll individual area wage su rveys have been com pleted, two sum m ary bulletins a re issued. The fir s t brings together data fo r each m etrop olitan a re a su rveyed. In this area, data w e re obtained by personal v is its of Bureau fie ld econom ists to rep resen ta tive estab lishments within six broad industry division s: Manufacturing; tra n s p o r tation, com m unication, and other public u tilities; w h olesale trad e; re ta il trade; finance, insurance, and re a l estate; and s e rv ic e s . M a jo r industry groups excluded fro m these studies are governm ent operations and the construction and ex tra c tiv e in du stries. E stablishm ents having fe w e r than a p rescrib ed number of w o rk e rs are om itted because of insu fficient em ploym ent in the occupations studied.
