T h e s e s u r v e y s a r e co nd ucted on a s a m p l e b a s i s b e c a u s e of
the u n n e c e s s a r y c o s t invo lv ed in s u r v e y in g a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s .
To
obtain op tim u m a c c u r a c y at m i n im u m c o s t , a g r e a t e r p r o p o r t io n of
l a r g e than of s m a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s i s stu d ied . In co m bining th e d a t a ,
h o w e v e r , a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s a r e g iv e n t h e ir a p p r o p r i a t e w eight. E s ­
t i m a t e s b a s e d on the e s t a b l i s h m e n t s stu d ie d a r e p r e s e n t e d , t h e r e f o r e ,
a s r e la t i n g to a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s in the i n d u s tr y g ro u p in g and a r e a ,
e x c e p t f o r t h o s e below the m i n im u m s i z e stu d ied .

The o c c u p a t io n s s e l e c t e d fo r study a r e c o m m o n to a v a r i e t y
of m a n u f a c t u r in g and n o n m a n u fac tu rin g i n d u s t r i e s , and a r e of the
follow ing t y p e s : (1) O ffice c l e r i c a l ; (2) p r o f e s s i o n a l and t e c h n i c a l ;
(3) m a i n t e n a n c e and p o w e rp la n t; and (4) c u s t o d ia l and m a t e r i a l m o v e ­
m e n t. O c c u p a tio n a l c l a s s i f i c a t i o n i s b a s e d on a u n i f o r m s e t of job
d e s c r i p t i o n s d e s i g n e d to t a k e a cc o u n t of inter e s t a b l i s h m e n t v a r i a t i o n
in d u tie s within the s a m e jo b . The o c c u p a t io n s s e l e c t e d f o r study
a r e l i s t e d and d e s c r i b e d in the ap p en d ix . The e a r n i n g s d a t a follow ing
