CONDITION OF IGMDEil BARKS*
In increase of 120 *5 mil lions in loans and investments* otiier than loans sec­
ured by Ui S. obligations and ty stocks aid bonds, offset in part ty declines in
U. S. security holdings,

is indicated in the Federal Reserve Board's weekly state­

ment of condition on Gctober 10 of 776 member banks in leading cities.

Accommod­

ation extended by the Federal Reserve banks to reporting member banlcs also shows a
material increase for the week.
During the week,holdings of Treasury certificates
of U, S* bonds - U»1 millions, while a nominal

declined 15*2 millions, and

increase ( .6 millions) is shown in

Victory notes held and an increase of 2*2 millions in war paper on hand.

Loans

secured by stocks and bonds show a liquidation of 19*1 millions, New York City
banlcs alone reporting a much greater reduction under this head#

A ll other loans

and investments went up 120*5 millions, all classes of banks participating in the
increase.

Aggregate holdings of war securities and war paper declined from 3 ,2 4 7 .2

millions to 3>230.7 millions,

and constitute 20 .9 Per cent of the total loans and

investments of all reporting banks,

compared with 2 1 .1 per cent the week before.

For the New York City banks a decline in this ratio frcm 26.2 to 2 5 *8 per cent is
noted»
Government deposits show an increase of 7*8 millions,
11 millions is reported for the New York City banks.

and time deposits increased 2 4 .9 millions *

Reserve balances (all with the F.R.banlcs)

show an increase for the week of 6 .3 millions, and cash in vault - o f l6»7 millions.
Accomodation by the F. R. banks through the discount of the reporting banks' own
no'tes and customers1 paper shows a further increase of 55*3 m illions.

these discounts and government deposits combined to holdings of U. S. war securities
and war paper works out at 70 per cent, as against 67 «7 per cent the week before.
For the New York City banks this ratio shows an increase for the week from 65*1 to

6S .5 per cent.

CONDITION OF FED3RAL RESERVE BANKS.
Gains in gold reserve through transfer of gold from tho European continent to
the Bank of England vaults and a moderate reduction in loan account are indicated
in the Federal Reserve Board1s weekly bank statement issued as at close of busi­
ness on October 2U,
