Prepared by Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
Released -

The Data
These dote are presented as an aid for the analysis of
economic developments in the Central M ississip p i Valley*
The emphasis is on economic activity in the metropolitan
orecs and five states completely or partially within the
Eighth Federal Reserve District* Because of the com
plexity of the economic process, a more meaningful analysis
can bo made by considering the entire set of indicators for
a particular area rather. than relying on any single one*
Moreover, there may be technical shortcomings in some
series*
All area data are presented in both unadjusted and adjus ted-for-seasonal-variation form* Index numbers are on a
1957-59 base* In addition, in order to smooth erratic fluc
tuations, the index of check payments is an average of the
indexes for three months and is centered on the middle month*
Basic employment data are developed by the respective
State Employment Security Offices*
The data for total loans and total deposits of member
banks are averages of data for the last Wednesday of the
preceding month, the Wednesday preceding the 15th of the
current month, and the last Wednesday of the current month*

Check payments ore reported monthly by all or a sample
of commercial banks in each area*
Check payments are
debits to demand deposit accounts, except interbank and (J*S*
Government accounts, and the index is also adjusted for
number of trading days in each month.

The consolidated employment indexes ere based on com
bined data from the metropolitan areas* The consolidated
index for check payments is based on reports from the 8
metropolitan areas and 11 other centers and includes 133
respondent banks* The consolidated banking indexes include
all member banks in the Eighth Federal Reserve District*

National data are from reports of the Department of Labor
and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System*

Basic state personal income figures are obtained from
Business Week, and farm cash receipts data are developed by
the U* S* Department of Agriculture*

Footnotes for charts:
1* All member banks
2* Three-month moving averages (except latest month, which
is a two-month average)

NOTES:

3* Annual figures are totals for the year*
are cumulative (year to date)*
4* Millions of dollars

Monthly figures

All employment data for the metropolitan areas of St. Louis, Memphis, and
Pine Bluff, and for the states of Arkansas and Mississippi have been revised
to a 1968 benchmark level. Personal income data for all states and the
United States unemployment rate have also been revised.
Revised employment data are not yet available for all states included in this
release. Therefore, the pages entitled "State Summary" are not included.
The substantial ;decline in payroll employment in the St. Louis Metropolitan
Area reflects a strike at one of the' maj or plants.
