MEMPHIS FORT SMITH LITTLE ROCK Prepared by Research Department Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis These data are presented as an aid in follow ing econom ic developments in these metropolitan centers. Because econom ic activity is com plex, a more meaningful analysis can be made by con sidering the entire set o f indicators than by relying on any single one. Moreover, there may be technical shortcomings in some series. A ll data have been adjusted for seasonal variations. In addition, in order to smooth erratic fluctuations, the electric power, department store sales, and check payments series are presented as three-month moving averages. The most recent observation presented for each o f these three in dicators is an average o f the last two months. The index o f industrial use o f e le c tr ic poser is based on data provided to this Bank by the public utilities in each area. Employment data are developed by the respective State Employment Security O ffices. Total sales figures ate provided by cooperating department stores in each center. It should be recognized that these data relate only to department store sales and do not necessarily reflect trends and fluctuations in other categories o f retail sales or in total retail sales. Check pay ments, or debits, are reported monthly by all or a sample o f commercial banks. The data for deposits and business loans are provided by the weekly reporting banks in each area, the monthly figures being averages o f weekly data. Deposits include time deposits and demand deposits other than interbank and U. S. Government, le ss cash items in process o f collection .
