3RD QUARTER 1979

DATA DESCRIPTION

Selected economic data for the Central Mississippi Valley (CMV) are
generally provided for five states and eight metropolitan areas which are
entirely or partially within the Eighth Federal Reserve District. In
addition, Federal Reserve member bank data are provided for three smaller
SMSAs (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas).and for all seven states and
nonmetropolitan areas within the Eighth District portion of these states.
Also, the metropolitan summary of population includes 13 SMSAs in the CMV.
Metropolitan areas refer to the 1973 SMSA definitions, except where noted, and
states in some cases refer only to the Eighth District portion of the state.
The latest data for some series are preliminary and will be revised as final
figures are received.
Income and Trade Indicators
Personal income and department store sales data are from the U.S.
Department of Commerce. In April 1977, numerous revisions were incorporated
into the department store series, including boundary redefinitions for SMSAs.
All agricultural data are from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Employment Indicators
Employment data are from the respective state Employment Security
Offices and the United States Department of Labor. Data for Memphis include
only Shelby and Tipton counties in Tennessee and Crittenden County in
Arkansas. Total employment, unemployment, and labor force are based on
household (place-of-residence) data. Payroll employment data, which include
manufacturing, nonmanufacturing, and hours and earnings in manufacturing, are
based on establishment (place-of-work) data.
Production and Price Indicators
Consumer price indices are from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Electric power consumption data for the Eighth Federal Reserve District are
based on reports to this Bank from various utility and self-generating firms
in the District and U.S. data are obtained from the Board of Governors of the
Federal Reserve System. The series Value of Construction Contracts Let are
from Dodge Construction Potentials, McGraw-Hill Information Systems Company.
Housing permits are from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Financial Indicators
Total loan and deposit data for states, metropolitan areas, and
nonmetropolitan areas are only from member banks in the Eighth District. Such
data are averages of the weekly member bank reports for the month and are not
strictly comparable over time due to withdrawals and additions of member banks
(see average number of member banks, page 35). Savings and loan data are
obtained from the various Federal Home Loan Banks. These data for the Fort
Smith metropolitan area include only those counties in the State of Arkansas,
and for St. Louis include only St. Louis City and St. Louis County in
Missouri, and Clinton, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties in Illinois.

SUM M ARY OF C E N TR A L MISSISSIPPI V A L L E Y ECONOMIC A C TIV ITY

Business activity in the Central Mississippi Valley (C M V ) over the past two
quarters (first quarter 1979 to third quarter 1979) has slowed more rapidly than in the
United States. So far the slowing has been concentrated in the manufacturing and
residential building sectors, both of which have slowed more in the region than in the
nation. Some sectors continue strong, however, such as nonresidential building and
agriculture.
The rate of growth of consumer spending in both the C M V region and the nation
slowed considerably in 1979. Department store sales in six C M V cities were up only about
6 percent in the three months ending August from the same period a year ago, and such
sales were up only about 7 percent for the nation as a whole. Although automobile sales
data for the region are not presently available, U.S. automobile sales (units) were down 11
percent in the three months ending in August from the same months a year ago.
In the past two quarters manufacturing activity, as measured by employment,
has slowed much more in the C M V region than in the United States. Such employment
declined at over a 7 percent annual rate in both the C M V states and cities whereas U.S.
manufacturing employment remained unchanged, on balance. Declines in manufacturing
employment have occurred in nearly all the major manufacturing industries in the C M V
with the largest losses concentrated in lumber and furniture and in automobile
manufacturing, where declines at rates of about 17 and 13 percent, respectively, occurred.
Nonmanufacturing employment has also slowed in the C M V region. Such
employment in the C M V states declined slightly in the past two quarters, but rose slightly
in the C M V cities. In comparison, U.S. nonmanufacturing employment continued to
advance at about a 3 percent annual rate. Payroll employment, comprising both
nonmanufacturing and manufacturing employment, declined at a 2.3 percent rate in the
C M V states, whereas U.S. payroll employment continued to post gains at about a 2.5
percent annual rate.
Part of the slower growth in nonmanufacturing employment can be attributed
to a greater slowing in the residential sector in the C M V region than in the United
States. Housing permits in the five C M V states were down in the third quarter about 12
percent from a year ago, and in the C M V cities were down about 25 percent. In
comparison, U.S. housing permits declined only about a 7.5 percent from a year ago.
Construction activity, overall, has remained fairly strong in the region due to increases in
nonresidential building activity. Nonresidential building contracts let in the C M V states
during the first three quarters o f 1979 were up about 25 percent from the same period a
year ago, about the same as the increase for the United States. Nevertheless,
construction employment in the five C M V states declined at a 5.2 percent annual rate
from the first to the third quarter, compared with a 6.4 percent rate of increase in the
United States.
The agricultural sector in the C M V , as well as in the nation, has produced large
crops in 1979 and with generally higher agricultural prices, farm income has subsequently
risen. Corn, soybean, and rice production in the C M V states rose 16, 22, and 7 percent,
respectively, from the 1978 level. Pork and poultry production also increased in the C M V
region. In the first eight months of this year, cash receipts in the five C M V states
averaged about 22 percent above a year earlier.
