F ederal reser ve ban k O F DALLAS Dallas, Texas, February 16,1961 To All Banks in the Eleventh Federal Reserve District: Another survey of one day’s volume of checks handled at the four offices of this bank was made to determine the number of checks that are preprinted in conformity with the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition Program of the American Bankers Association. The following tabulation shows the results of the survey: O ffice Dallas City Country El Paso City Country Houston City Country San Antonio City Country Num of ber Checks Surveyed Num of ber Checks Conform ing Percentage of Conformity 47,700 237,600 15,800 19,500 33.12 8.20 9,000 21,000 1,000 1,432 11.11 6.82 24,000 126,000 3,000 14,000 12.50 11.11 26,000 101,000 24 3,000 .09 2.97 The survey shows that, on the basis of totals for the district, the conformity ratio increased 6.20 percentage points for city checks and 5.5,3 percentage points for country checks since our last survey in November 1960. Moreover, the number of banks participating in the program increased substantially. While the results of the survey are encouraging, a greater percentage of con formity is necessary to assure success of the check mechanization program. Banks will be informed periodically as to the progress made in this district. Yours very truly, Watrous H.
