NEW DESIGN OF DOMESTIC AND
MILITARY MONEY ORDERS

TO ALL BANKS IN THE
ELEVENTH FEDERAL RESERVE DISTRICT:
T he United States Postal S ervice has a sk ed this Bank to inform
all banks in the Eleventh District of a change that is being made in the d e ­
sign of both domestic and military money o r d e r s . The ch a n g e s, which a re
d escrib ed below, a r e being made for s e c u rity and p ro cessin g reaso n s.
Although some of the new style m ilitary Postal Money O rd ers a re
alread y in circu latio n , the new style domestic money o rd e rs will not be issued
initially until November or December of this y e a r . T he c u r r e n t style of
Postal Money O rd ers will continue to be issued until existing supplies a re
exhausted; co n seq uen tly, thro ug h at least a p a rt of 1980, your bank can
expect to receive both the c u r r e n t v ersion and the new style of Postal Money
O rd e rs .
T he United States Postal S ervice has indicated that the new style
Postal Money O rd ers differ from the c u r r e n t v ersio n in the following ways:

The eagle is in outline to improve the legibility of
a d d r e s s information when photocopies a r e made.
T h e re is a re g iste re d tradem ark symbol on the
rig h t of the claw.

2.

By encouraging the custom er to p rovide complete
information in the a d d r e s s a r e a , identification of
the p erson cashing the money o rd e r will be more
positive and g r e a te r difficulties will be p resen ted
to p erso n s contemplating an im proper payment.

3.

In the limitation plate are a the word "dollars" has
been modified so that after im printing it will be
partially covered with the limitation plate value.
T his has been done to h in d e r changing the amounts
of money o r d e r s . The w ords "maximum value" have
been p rin ted beneath " d o llars."

T he color b ro w n , used for p rin tin g "money ord er"
on the left and "USA" on the r ig h t, has been s u b ­
stituted with black to redu ce c o s ts . Also, a yellow
tin t, p rin ted o v e r the background d e s ig n , has been
eliminated so that a p erson changing the amounts of
money o rd e rs has to re sto re the background design
rath er than the yellow tint.

The Postal S ervice banking code num ber on the
bottom left c o rn e r has been changed to 000 000 204.

T he instru ctio ns have been simplified and placed
at the serial num ber end in o r d e r to conform with
T r e a s u ry and banking req u irem en ts.

2.

The thick yellow line has been elim inated. T e st­
ing has shown that an overlap of the endorsem ent
sig n a tu re into the read band area is not a problem .

3.

T he p a ra g ra p h "To the Cashier" has been changed
so that fu tu re increases in the maximum value of
any o rd e r will not p re se n t cashing problem s.
