THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓ Following no change in July, the producer price index for finished
goods (PPI) rose at a 3.7 percent annual rate in August. Food
prices surged up at a 13.3 percent rate, while energy prices
advanced at a 9.2 percent rate. Excluding these two components,
the PPI fell at a 0.8 percent rate in August, the third drop this year.

/ Business sector productivity growth decelerated in the second
quarter, advancing at a 1.2 percent annual rate, after rising at a
2 percent rate in the first quarter. The business sector implicit
price deflator increased at a 2.2 percent pace in the second quarter
and is up 1.8 percent from four quarters earlier.
%/ The nominal value of total sales at merchant wholesalers rose
2.4 percent in July—the largest jump in almost two years. Sales
rose at an 11 percent annual rate between January and July after
rising at a 5.7 percent rate over the previous six months.

✓ Nonfarm payroll employment increased at a 2.5 percent annual
rate in August, modestly slower than the 2.9 percent rate of gain
for the three months ending in July. The civilian unemployment
rate, by contrast, fell 0.3 percentage points in August to 5.1 percent,
the lowest rate since March 1989.
