FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK _ . _ ["Circular No. 711~1 Ouh Department LJanuary 9, 1926 J New Counterfeits To all Banks, Trust Companies and Others Concerned in the Second Federal Reserve District: The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 574 describes two new counterfeits as follows: 1. #5 United States Note; Series of 1907; check letter " A " ; face plate number indistinct, looks like 126; W. S. Elliott, Register of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Jackson. This counterfeit is identical in workmanship with those described in our Circular Letters 562* and 571*, except as to the check letter and the plate number. They should be readily detected owing to the poor workmanship displayed on the counterfeit. 2. $20 Federal Reserve Note; on the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio; Series of 1914; check letter " C " ; face plate 163; back plate 915; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Cleveland. This is a fairly well made counterfeit; apparently printed from lithographic plates on a single piece of paper, red ink lines used to imitate the silk fibre of the genuine. The fine lines of the lathework of this bill, both face and back, are not clearly defined and in places the design appears in solid color. The number of the specimen at hand is D-24904691A. Care should be exercised in handling bills of this issue. In our Circular Letter 569,** the counterfeit Gold Certificate is described as bearing face plate number "57". This number on the specimen from which the circular was prepared was quite indistinct, a later and better printed specimen clearly shows the face plate number "17". Please note this correction. Very truly yours, BBNJ. STRONG, Governor. • Reference to Federal Reserve Bank of New York Circulars 684 and 706. *• Reference to Federal Reserve Bank of New York Circular 702.
