1 T h e N e w Or le an s Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined b y the B u r e a u of the Bu dg et through J a nu ar y 1968, consists of Jefferson,
Orleans, St. Bern ar d, an d St. T a m m a n y Parishes. T h e " w o r k e r s within scope of study" estimates s h o w n in this table provide a reasonably accurate
description of the size an d composition of the labor force included in the survey.
T h e estimates are not intended, h o we ve r, to serve as a basis
of c o m p a r i s o n with other e m p l o y m e n t indexes for the area to m e a s u r e e m p l o y m e n t trends or levels since (1) planning of w a g e surveys requires the
use of establishment data c o mp il ed considerably in ad va nc e of the payroll period studied, and (2) small establishments are excluded f r o m the scope
of the survey.
2 T h e 1967 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification M a n u a l w a s us e d in classifying establishments by industry division.
3 Includes all establishments with total e m p l o y m e n t at or above the m i n i m u m limitation. All outlets (within the area) of c o m p a n i e s in such
industries as trade, finance, auto repair service, and m o t i o n picture theaters are considered as 1 establishment.
4 Includes all w o r k e r s in all establishments with total e m p l o y m e n t (within the area) at or a bove the m i n i m u m limitation.
5 Taxicabs and services incidental to wa te r transportation w e r e excluded.
6 This industry division is represented in estimates for "all industries" and "n onmanufacturing" in the Series A tables. Separate presentation
of data for this division is not m a d e for one or m o r e of the following reasons: (1) E m p l o y m e n t in the division is too small to provide en ou gh data
to merit separate study, (2) the s a m p l e w a s not designed initially to p e rm it separate presentation, (3) re sponse w a s insufficient or inadequate to
pe rm it separate presentation, and (4) there is possibility of disclosure of individual establishment data.
7 Hotels and motels; laundries and other personal services; business services; automobile repair, rental, and parking; mo t i o n pictures;
nonprofit m e m b e r s h i p organizations (excluding religious and charitable organizations); and engineering an d architectural services.

A l m o s t one-third of the w o r k e r s within scope of the su rv ey in the N e w Orleans area
w e r e e m p l o y e d in manufacturing firms.
