DEPARTMENT STORE SALES IN OCTOBER, 1932
Preliminary r e p o r t
Preliminary f i g u r e s on t h e value of department s t o r e s a l e s show an i n c r e a s e
from September t o October of about t h e estimated seasonal amount.
The Federal
Reserve Board's index, which makes allowance both f o r number of business days
and f o r usual seasonal changes, was JO in October on t h e b a s i s of the 1923-1925
average as 100, compared with JO i n September and 66 i n August.
In comparison with a year ago t h e value of s a l e s f o r October, according t o
the p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s , was 21 per cent smaller; when allowance i s made f o r t h e
f a c t t h a t t h e r e was one l e s s b u s i n e s s day i n October t h i s year than l a s t the dec l i n e i s IS per c e n t .
The aggregate f o r t h e f i r s t t e n months of t h e year was
23 per cent smaller than f o r t h e corresponding p e r i o d of 1931*
