R e t a i l Trade in A p r i l . 1926 Total s a l e s in April of 524 r e t a i l f i r m s , which made preliminary r e p o r t s to the Federal r e s e r v e system from a l l sections of the country, were 2 per cent smaller than in April of l a s t y e a r . Smaller s a l e s were reported from a l l Federal reserve d i s t r i c t s except the A t l a n t a , Chicago, S t . Louis, and San Francisco d i s t r i c t s where s a l e s were s l i g h t l y l a r g e r . The l a r g e s t d e c l i n e s were in the Minneapolis and Kansas City d i s t r i c t s and amounted to 7.6 per cent and 8 . 6 per cent r e s p e c t i v e l y * Of the t o t a l number of s t o r e s reporting 344 showed deolinea and 180 reported i n c r e a s e s . Sales of two mail order houses were 7 . 1 per cent xarger than in A p r i l , 1926, and s a l e s of f i v e and ten cent chain s t o r e s (5 chains) were 3 . 2 per cent l a r g e r than a year ago. Smaller s a l e s in April t h i s year than in 19^5 were due in p a r t to the f a c t that the Easter trading season f e l l l a r g e l y in March because of the e a r l i e r date f o r Easter than in 1925.
