In March of 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, giving the United States Army the authority to move Japanese Americans living in the western states into concentration camps. After the administration approved the order, Japanese Americans, some of them American citizens, had to leave their homes, businesses, and most of their personal property. The United States Treasury was responsible for protecting the property they left behind. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco administered the evacuee property program for the Treasury. This collection consists of selected records that reflect the bank's tasks in assisting evacuees and arranging the disposition of property.
