X si at X -•’*~B PORTLAND BRANCH Evacuee Property Department March 27, 1942 Mr* Charles P, Pray, Superintendent, Department of State Police, Salem, Oregon* Dear Mr. Prays On January 3, 1942, the Office of the United States Attorney, sent to all state and local Police authorities, a notice calling their attention to the fact that the President had, by his proclamations of December 7 and 8 , 1941, directed in the interests of national safety that alien enemies should not possess or use various items, such as firearms, weapons, ammunition, short-wave radio sets, signal devices, etc. The notice stated further it was necessary to require alien enemies to deposit such prohibited articles with law enforcement agencies and asked for the help and cooperation of the local police authorities throughout the country. Public Proclamation Ko. 3, dated March 24, 1942, issued by J* L. Be itt, Lieutenant General, U* S. Army, carries a pro vision that after Larch 31, 1942, no persons of Japanese ancestry shall ’ave in his possession similar items. Please inform us as to the amount of such contraband now in your hnnds and also ny information as to the uantity of contraband remaining in the hands of United Htates citizens of Japanese ancestry will be greatly appreciated.
