In behalf oi the Portland,Chapter of the Japanese American
Citizens League I wish to thank the Portland Branch of the Federal
Reserve Bank. Ever since the time that the Federal Reserve
Bank was designated as the agency through which the business
matters of the evacuees would be handled, we have received
every consideration from the Portland office.
The personnel of the Portland office has also been above
reproach for they have listened to all the problems of the
evacuees and tried to the best of their ability to do what
was considered fair with the interest of the evacuee at heart.
I sincerely appreciate the work that the personnel has done,
and I am sure the people they have helped have also expressed
their appreciation.
I am also writing to our national office, which is at the
present time located in Salt Lake City, Utah, expressing our
appreciation forthe work that the Portland office of the Federal
Reserve Bank has done.

Dear Sir:
1 was in your Portland office this morning
to find out about protection as to fire insurance
for our dwellings and businesses that we are leaving
behind. As you know, all insurance companies ca n
celled out liability insurance and automobiles and
plate glass on all establishments occupied by
Japanese immediately after the outbreak of the
war.
Consequently, the majority of us have been
without protection.
As in the case of plate glass, the insurance
companies immediately cancelled all risks in the
establishments occupied by Japanese after three
or four plate glass claims came into their offices.
I am afraid, or rather, I am certain that the in
surance companies will do likewise if one or two of
the buildings of the Japanese should burn by
b y arson
or accident, and we wuld be without any means of
protection •
Plea.se let me know immediately what your office
can arrange for us to protect these properties, so
that we can make proper arrangements in accordance
with your answer.

Dear &r. Jenkins;
On Tanuary 3, 1942, the Office of the United .States
Attorney, sent to a ll state and local Police authorities, a
notice calling their attention to the fact that the President
had, by his proclamations of December 7 and 8, 1941, directed
in the interests of national safety that alien enemies should
not possess or use various items, such as firearms, weapons,
ammunition, short-wave radio sets, signal devices, etc. The
notice stated further it was necessary to require alien enemies
to deposit such prohibited articles with law enforceraeat agencies
and asked for the help and cooperation of the local police
authorities throughout the country.
Public Proclamation No. 3, dated Karch 24, 1942, issued
by J. L. De i t t , Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, carries a pro*
vision that after Kerch 31, 1942, no persons of Japanese
ancestry shall have in his possession similar items.
Please inform us as to the amount of such contraband
now in your hands and also any information as to the quantity
of contraband remaining in the hands of United States citizens
of Japanese ancestry w ill be greatly appreciated.
