Reference is made to your letter of April ?f 1942* I wish to
thank you for your courtesy and the informations contained in your le tte r have
clarified many things to us*
I w ill greatly appreciate clarification of the following informations,
since, it has been re ^ y d iffic u lt to obtain any explanation from local authorities:
a* *'y wife is of the white raoo and ny so® is naturally a "hybrid"*
My wife is of the opinion that since she has never been well due to u poet
rheumatic condition (rheumatic heart disease) it my be better for her and our
son to reside near Hillsboro, Oregon at a home of her rslative for the duration*
This w ill mean family separation but it may be best from standpoint of social
adjustments* I would like to ask you if th is arrangement w ill be contrary to
regulations?
b* reference second paragraph of your letter: you stated that
"beddings and linens (not raattross) w ill be permitted"* Does that man that
pillows(4j two for w ife, one each for son and iayeclf) w ill be furnished? Are
the beds provided to married couple, double-bed type? I f not, it w ill mean that
each merfcer w ill need four blankets and one comforter (as ray experience in the
CSC and Army shows)* *.lao we have found that it takes two large trunks to pro
vide enoug containers for clothes for tho members of our family (3) alone* In
your letter you said "The size and number of packages undoubtedly w ill be I t ited
to that which can be carried by the individual or family group". Does that mean
that I can take only enou^i things able to be carried by myself alone (my
wife is an invalid and ny son is only 6 yrs of age)* Surely one m at taka along
adequate clothing to protect one from disease, environmental conditions and undue
hardships? hat type of clothes w ill be the best to take? Am I to become a
laborer? Is my wife to wear clothes supplied by the Governs® nt?
c. I have a property (a lot) 75 x 113 f t located on the comer of
N* • 36 and Skidmore. It is assessed as ’470.00 by the City of Portland* Haw
do I go about disposing of it? I also have a almost new, 1941 Buick tpeci-1 De
luxe r.edanot (Cedar Green) (loss than 10,000 & loage) with radio, etc*, 111
the Bank help m to dispose of it? Or w ill I neod it in my professional work?
d. My office furniture has to be disposed of* tow w ill I obtain per
mission to go to Portland?^ I have tried to obtain a pe rait fbr that purpose but
has bee® unsuccessful.
e* How do I go about requesting transportation for ray furniture here
and in Portland for storage at you storage depot?
f* liy life insurance w ill become due on June 6, 1942 for the amount of

Until very recently, I have been in the employ of the
Waiwocc Department and Have been reading the papers concerning the
coming evacuation of aliens and citizens of Japanese \noestry from
the Pacific Coastal 'reas, Hoover, I have been unable to obtain any
Information concerning the evacuation and the regulations governing
such evacuation. I w ill greatly appreciate it , therefore, if you w ill
olarxfy some of the things I wish to know, after I have submitted
the following information concerning myselfj
I am an American Citizen of Japanese Ancestry, age 36 years,
my wife is of the Caucasian race, and I have one son 6 years of age*
I have been a Reserve Officer of the United f tates since 1929; my
present rank is Captain, Medical Reserve. I have applied for active
duty but as yet have not received a reply from the Commanding General
Ninth Corps Area* I have been employed by the ar-CCC Department,
as camp surgeca and ssistant D istrict Surgeon since Hay 18, 1936.
I am licensed to practice iedicine and Surgery in Oregon. I have
served as Civil Service examining physician for the 11th C ivil
Service D istrict ard as O fficial C.M.T.C. Examiner. At presentl am
serving as xamining Physician for Douglas County Selective Service
Board No. 1. I have not disposed of my household goods or furniture
as yet. I have my office furniture stored in the Gerlinger Building
Portland, Oregon.
The following informations w ill be appreciated: The procedure
and regulations governing the coming evacuation (the date and the
probable resettlement area) ow long a time w ill we get to ready ourselves
after notice of date of evacuation is received? What furnitures as
was ing machine, stoves, refrigerator, cooking u ten sils, beddings,
radio, light fixtu res, w ill each family be allowed to bring with them?
Jho w ill furnish the fa c ilitie s for transportation? What type of house
is to be allocated at the permanent settlemsnt area for the duration?
Will these houses be furnished? What fa c ilitie s for earning a living
w ill be provided for a professional man’s family? Will my son have a
chance to continue his schooling? Will my wife who is of the white race
be permitted to withdraw from such areas? m i she be able to eat the
type of food furnished or are food to be provided each family?
(A lis t of things we are allowed to take with us, w ill be helpful).
I have my office furniture in Portland. Will I have to take them along
or should I s e ll them as soon as possible?

Deference is made to your letter dated April 4,
1942.
For your information the Federal Reserve Bank w ill
provide for the storage, at the sole risk of the owner, of the
more substantial household items such as ice boxes, washing
machines, pianos and other heavy furniture* Cooking utensils
and. other small items w ill be accepted if crated, packed,
and olninly m rked.
A definite warehouse location for your immediate
community has not as yet been determined. However, no
services along this line w ill be available until the particular
area in which you are living is to be evacuated.

which is approximately five miles north of Salem on hirhway No* 99F, and the fo l
lowing information was obtained from Huzie FOkuda, sister of Frank Fukuda owner of
the grocery store, service station and residence located on a three acre tract*
‘t’he oremerty is listed with the T'icks Realty Company In Salem, either for
rent or for lease* In the event no tenants can be found before evacuation, ten
et ive arrangements have boon mndo with Baler; Wholesalers to take back the
stock of merchandise on hand*
«e were Informed Spindlers iafrigerator and kjuipaent Corrpany have agreed
to take back a large refrigerator* other fixtures would bo 1 f t in the store and
authority lo ft with the ' Icks Fealty Company to either rent or lease the premises
whenever a tenant could be found*
A ca ll was then made on ,toutId Jones of the Labish Cold Storage Oorpany
at Brooks, Oregon from whom the Vukudafe are purchasing the land and buildings*

even though a new tenant could not be located inaodiately*
