S i r s :

ATTENTION: Mr. Merrick, Division of
_____________ Bank Operations._________
Following our recent telephone conversation, we en

close a statement showing the total volume of acceptances
purchased by countries by months during the year 1931.

We

also enclose a revised statement showing each Federal reserve
bank*s participation in these totals.
The revision was necessitated in part by the fact
that owing to delay in receipt of schedules for the latter
part of May and latter part of June we had included the
figures contained therein in the totals of June and July
respectively.

In preparing the statement which we sent to

you on February 3 we did not treat replacements of matured
bills as new purchases, whereas in the revised statement we
have considered replacements as entirely new investments.
As the result of the above corrections the totals of the
two enclosed statements now coincide.
In July and August we purchased the equivalent in
sterling bills of $1,757,802.22 and $2,644,984.64 respectively
!

which on August 8 were transferred to the Bank of England
credit as part of the first drawing under that credit.

As

in our opinion, this represented merely a transfer of the
bills in question from one account to another, we did not
