Dear Sir:
In accordance with your request of September 25, we shall hence
forth omit from the cable sent to you every Monday the figure of total
monetary gold stock in the United State*.
It is not possible to send you weekly figures of total excess reser
ves of all licensed member banks as you request, for only monthly averages
of daily figures are published, usually about 7 weeks after the month to
which they relate.

They currently appear in the Federal Reserve Bulletin,

the averages for month* up to and including July being given on page 544
of the September issue,

fe shall cable you the average for August about

October 25 and thereafter those for subsequent months, following the code
prefix (w).

We shall also cabls you, following the code prefixes desig

nated in parentheses, adjusted monthly index numbers of (p) Industrial
production in the United State* as follows and in the order given —
total, manufactures, minerals, Iron and steel, textiles, food products,
lumber, automobiles, leather and products, and cement; (r) factory *nv
ployment; (t) department store sales; and unadjusted monthly index num
bers of (e) factory pay rolls and (u) wholesale prices of all commodities
and of farm product* as compiled by the Bxreau of Labor Statistics.

I have made the attached reply to Affarsvarlden fairly complete, hear
ing In mind that we shall probably have to refer to it frequently since
-4*-ft A
the procedure is somewhat complicated.
The library does not receive the periodical published by Affarsvarlden
In which our figures are used.

I think they should, and I have suggested

to the library that Affarsvarlden would no doubt be willing to send it
on an exchange basis.

Mr. E.A.G-oldenweiser, Director,
Division of Research and Statistics,
Federal Reserve Board,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Goldenweiser,
In the cables you are sending our paper every week on Monday
night, a figure is included showing the total monetary gold stock
of the U. S.A. As this figure is not now of the same importance
to us as previously we ask you to omij; the same and, if possible,
include instead in the weekly cable the latest figure available
regarding the excess reserves of all licensed member banks.
At the same time we take the liberty asking for several
additions of monthly figures. You send us now every month by cable
three index numbers

of production, i.e. total, manufacturers, and

minerals. We should be very much obliged to you for adding the
adjusted production index numbers for the following groups:
Iron and steel
Textiles
Food products
Lumber
Automobiles
Leather and products
C ement.
Further, we should much appreciate if you would cable us the
following monthly index numbers:

L .■>

Factory employment, adjusted /F.R.B./
Factory pay rolls /F.R.B./
Department store sales, adjusted /F.R.B./
Wholesale prices /Bureau of Labor Statistics/:

As we are going to press just after receiving your weekly
cable it would be of very great advantage to get the monthly
figures in a separate cable once a month as soon as the figures
of production indexes are released. We should then have better
time to make our comments and prepare graphs &c. However, if
all the monthly figures should not be available at the time
the production index numbers are being released, please do not
delay sending the monthly cable. The remaining figures could be
sent in the next weekly cable.
In an appendix we bring together all the figures we should
like to get and suggest a prefix in form of a letter /p, r, s,
t, u/ for the different series of figures.
The first monthly cable in the new form, containing the figures
for August, may be sent immediately. The September figures we
await about the 23:rd October.
It is a lot of trouble we give you but we hope you will excuse
us owing to the very great importance the development in your
country will have upon the economic situation in the world. We
dare say that all business men in Northern Europe with keen in
terest follow your index numbers in our paper.

Your kind and

helpful assistance would be very much appreciated.

Very truly yours

Mr* F* A. Goldenweiser,
Director of Research and Statistics,
Federal Reserve Board,
Room 422, Shoreham Building,
Washington, D. C.

] r dear Mr* Goldenw eiser:®
I am glad to learn from your letter of August 8 th, that
arrangements are being made for the continuance of the messages which
have been sent for along time past to "Affarsvarl&en - Stockholm*"
I do not see aiy reason i d y it is not entirely practicable
si
for "Affarsvarlden" to put up a deposit either with you or with us to
cover the cost of sending these messages.
In fact, I mentioned this to our Hew yoifc office aid the
only point raised was a reminder of the fact that the discontinuance of
the collect arrangement resulted in difficulties over exchange rates,
and possibly we may have the sane difficulties about the conversion of
the deposit from Swedish money to American money*
Of course, the simplest plan would be to have them put up
a deposit of, sgy, $25*00 in U*S* money, payiig for this deposit the rate
of exchange which is current at the time they mains the remittance* Hereto
fore, of course they have paid their collect bills in Swedish money on a
gold basis, ?hich corresponded to the exact charges as figured in Gold
Francs* The rates for international messages are established not in the A'
currency o f the various countries but in Gold Francs, in accordance w ith
schedules f i l e d from time to time w ith the International Telegraph union
at Berne, Switzerland*
The handling o f the funds which they are sending at p resen t
to you and w i l l probably send to us in the fu tu re , may e n t a il c erta in com
p lic a t io n s , but we sh a ll do our best to work them out to the s a t is fa c t io n
o f a l l concerned*

Thank you for your interest in the matter*

Very truly yours,

fpg / s

Scott Turner, Director

Dear Sir:
Since 1924 jour institution has had the great kindness
of sending my paper, "AFFARSfAHLBSN*, every week a cable regarding
the U. S. production of bituminous coal*

Ve have, however, now

arranged to get this figure included in another weekly cable we
receive from your country.

Therefore it will not longer be necessary

to trouble you with sending your cable*
It Is not necessary to send us the monthly report of
distribution of coal shipments, but the weekly production report
we should be glad to receive from you by mail as hitherto*

I am. Dear Sir,
Yours f £ thfully,

We are wondering, therefore, whether you want
us to continue to include in our radiogram the fig

Dear Ur. fltger:
■

In accordance with the request in your letter
of February 20 , re recently hare been Including in
the radiogram cent to you every Monday the figures
for the weekly production of bituminous coal. In
the following week these estimates are usually re
vised. le have not been sending these revisions In
the radiogram on the assumption that alight ohangee
were not of sufficient importance to warrant the ex
pense of including them.
Vs have asked the Bureau of M n e s to place your
name on the mailing list for the Weekly Coal Report,
if it ia not already there. The report ia the source
from which we obtain the figures for the production
of ooal, and it contains whatever revisions have been
made in the estimates.
If you would prefer to have the oorreotione more
promptly, we shall be glad to include the revised fig
ures in the radiogram at the end of the usual message.
