Ey Dear Sir: I am taking the liberty of addressing you as one of the members of the Regional Reserve Bank Organization Committee. as in of in I attended the hearing in Chicago and was delegated Chairman of about fifty tankers from Iowa, Igto met Chicago to attend the hearing, to present the case Iowa and request that Iowa as a whole be kept intact the nicago district. After addressing the Organization Committee to that end, I called attention to the fact that this City was located on the western border of Iowa and has a trade territory comprising northern Nebraska, South Dakota, Southwestern Minnesota, as —ell as Northwestern Iowa, that is Chiefly Sioux City trade and banking territory I called attentto the exclusion of any other City. served in this ion to the fact th:t Sioux City banks territory upwards of 1000 b.nks, which carry accounts with Sioux City banks. I stated that Sioux City had a population of about 60,000 at this time. I particularly called attention to the fact, that if South /12174,;r, Dakota were to be put into a possible ::.inneapolis Ft4, and Nebraska into a possible Omaha district district or Kansas City district and Iowa into a Chicago dis22.4 trict, it would leave Sioux City in the corner of t which I feel would work greatly to the disdistricts, advantage of the banking and business interests of Sioux City. I also attended the Lincoln hearing last 7aturdAy, having been delegated by the Iowa Bankers to do so, for the purpose of being informed on the claims preIn this connection I sented by Lincoln and Omah4. might say, that Sioux City could present data Showing it to be, in the matter of its banking facilities and in the matter of its jobbing and distributing business far ahead of Lincoln, althourh Lincoln claimed r‘ • t, 0 http://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis 1757 • JOHN McHUGH, PRESIDENT H.A.GOOCH,CA5HIER 0.D.PETTIT, ASST. I did not feel that I could with properiety, ask re the Committee to hoar , further than What I presented at Chicago, but since returning home it seems to re, that in view of the large territory we serve in three states mentioned, careful consideration ought to be riven by the Organization Committee, to the ill effect which Sioux City might suffer, if its territory should be divided up among three regional reserve districts. I, therefore, concluded to address you for the purpuse of ascertaining 7hether a committee from our stockyards, jobbing and banking interests would to given a hearinr by the Organization Comittee at 7iashington, after the return of the Committee to Washington, and before a conclusion is reached as to the boundaries ar the proposed districts. I might add that Sioux City, ranks next to Kansas City and Omaha as a packing and livestock market. If you will he kird enough to advise me when the Committee will be tack in :!ashington and whether we might have an opportunity to sllaplement that I said in Chicago, with figures and data, I will appreciate it very much. Secretary: I am receiving a great many letters and telegrams relative to the establishment of a regional reserve bank in the Pacific Northwest, and especially a large number from Spokane, asking that that city be made a reserve center. I consider that it is more than likely that y'on will establish two reserve banks west of the Rocky Mountains, and as one will doubtless b0 established at San Francisco, the concensus of opinion seems to favor Spokane for the second. I was v-ry much surprised to receive a number of telegrams and letters alonp: this line from my friends in Boise, Idaho, and it seems to me that if it is possible to establish a bank in the Pacific Northwest, the repults would be beneficial and far-reaching in effect. The the Northwest visit Spokane to a regional the necessary Chambers of Commerce and business men of are especially anxious that you should and hear their claims as to thrjr right reserve bank, and their ability to secure capital. In this connection, I might add that I have just returned from a trip in the southern part of the State as far as Ceiro, Illinois, on other busines- matters, and was interested in learning that apparently the great majority of all the banks in that section, , outside of St. Clair County, which is opposite St. Louis, appear to http://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis prefer to belong to a reserve bank located in Chicago than to one in any other section. Jany. 16th, 1914. Secretary of the Treasury, Washington, D. C. Dear Sir:— Since it has been announced in the newspapers, that Savannah , " Georgia's. claims for tie location of the Regional Reserve Bank, would be heard in Atlanta, many protests have come to me from constituents and friends in Savannah. It is only a short run from Atlanta to Savannah. You could hear Atlanta's claims one day in Atlanta, and Savannah's claims the next day in Savannah. The banksre of Savannah and that whole section, are exceedingly Ow anxious that this courtesy be shown them. They feel they would be placed at a disadvantage in being required to go to Atlanta, which city is also an applicant for the Regional Reserve Bank. Please arrange this matter, if possible, so that Savannah's claims can, and wil) be heard at Savannah, as it will/entail very little more work, and I think no more time on the to s of those who are pass upon the question, and it will be greatly appreciated by many of your friends in that section of the country. U. S. A. January 10, 1914 Hon. 7m. Gibbs licildoo, Reserve Bank Organization Comrittee, Treasury Department, 77ashington, D. C. Dear Sir: In puttin- into practice the new Currency Law, the Seattle Commercial Club wishes to express its gratification that you are going to afford a full and fair consideration to the great Northwest. It is acknowledged and cannot be denied that no section of the Uniited States is being developed more rapidly, and without Oception, there is no territory within the bounds of oiWgovernment wherein the future prospects for commercial aYid industrial development 4re greater than is in store for the Pacific Northwest. Alaska, nearly as large as any six middle western states, the great provinces of British Colimbin which must more or less be served by our section of the ,:ountry, the Northwest itself and the probable great trade with the Orient, justify this request. e feel that one of the great fundamental principles of the Currency Law is to get away from too much concentration of the Nation's money, and this being the case, our territory and its tributaries can be served best by making the Great Northwest a separate reserve district. Therefore, we feel assured that you gentlemen of the Organization Committee will visit this district with open minds, reserving your judgment until a full and free heating of our assembled facts is had, and a concrete showing made, as -Jill be.
