GEITSRAL LETTER.
Dear Sir:Uo feature of the Uaw Currency legislati on
has met with more popular favor than the extension
of the number of Regional Banks as originally
suggested by the Senate.
This w ill make possible the establishment
of one of them in the South Atlantic States,— today,
the very centre of a pulsing throbbing prosperity
perhaps not equalled in any other part of the
United States.
Than the Southern banker and merchant, no one
is to be nore benefited - for the space of four months between laying by and harvest is the dryest drought
in our circulation.
To be able to use your high grade commercial
paper at a nearby discount bank, to tide over this lean
summer period - must prove of great benefit to all
of our industrial and commercial enterprises.
For these reasons we hope you may be
inclined to urge your oank to promptly apply for
msmbership, so that our people may be unanimous in
holding up the hands of the President who has so wisely
brought this important legislation to a successful
consu'niat ion.

Cordially

President.

GENERAL LETTER:Recognizing that under the new currency law one
of the regional hanks should oome to Georgia, and appreciating
the importance in making no sort of error in putting the
measure into effect, you have no doubt thought seriously of
the question of location.
Loyalty to your own state will naturally make
any cifr&within its borders a matter of personal preference
which is to he expected* Beyond this, however, we desire
to enlist your support in behalf of Atlanta, believing that
in its magnificent facilities lie the prospect of the
widest good to not only the towns and cities of the
territory, hut the needy agricultural sections as well.
Our city is eminently fortunate in its
geographical location and has facilities for the exact
service required. Being also a true Democratic community,
it is in f u l l and sympathetic accord with all the intents
and desires hack of the enactment of the measure.
We w ill greatly appreciate your help and
support for Atlanta, believing as we do that in so
u tilizin g your influence you will contribute to the
permanent success of the business of all the South, the
credit and usefulness of the national administration,
and the comprehensive application of the act*

ATLANTA THE BEST SITE FOR A REGIONAL BANK
FOR THE SOUTHEASTERN STATES
In order to secure a regional bank fo r the Southeastern States, it is nccessary to select the city from which
^•li bank can best serve tliat territory. Concentration on such a city will undoubtedly win, but if the influence
of tho Southeast is divided between a number o f cities it will make it that much more difficult to secure the location
of a bank in this region.

Inasmuch as only one regional bank will be located in the Southeast, the only safe course to pursue is for
the Southeastern States to concentrate on Atlanta, the leading city, which is beyond question better equipped for

this work than any other city within the same territory.
Atlanta is the nearest city by average distance to all the territory between Virginia and the Mississippi
River.

Within that territory a regional bank at Atlanta can reach more people, more products of the farm and
factory, more business, more banks and more banking capital, between the close of banks one day and their open
ing next morning, than it could if located in any other city.
This city is the financial center, the insurance center, the official railway headquarters, telegraph and tele
phone headquarters, and headquarters for more manufacturers’ agents than any other city in the South. Its
business equipment is by far the best, as evidenced by its massive groups of office buildings, the like of which is
not seen anywhere else in the South.

ATLANTA’S GROWTH
Atlanta’s rapid growth is indicated by the following facts:
Atlanta’s population increased from 89,832 to 154,839 in ten years, and is now 190,000.
Its bank clearings grew from $60,753,911 in 1893 to $725,604,192.65 in 1918. These are by far the
largest in the territory, as shown by the following statistics for 1913 furnished by the New York Financial Chron
icle:

Organization Comittee,
Regional Reserve Bank,
Washington D. C. '
Dear Sirs:I understand thht there are to be eight or ten
reserve Banks established in the United States and as
Atlanta, Ga.* is our great Clearing House fot the State of
Georgia I think it would be bestowing a graet favor on the
Empire State of the South if you would establish one of these
Banks in Atlanta.
It is useless for rae to go into details as to my reasons for
asking this favor for our Southland as it would take too
long to explain them however I will state that it will
be appreciate by a gretfull buisness class if you will
so favor them.

ve&r Sir:When x noticed that the new currency bill
provided

for the establishment of not less than eight regional banks,! at

once assumed that one of these banks would logically be located in Atlanta, because it is impossible to pick out eight cities in t,he United States that

superior claims to those of A tlan ta .
Relatively to the state itself, and relatively to the southeastern

Organization Committee,
Regional Reserve Bank,
Washington, D. C
Gentlemen:
In locating a Regional Reserve Bank in the
City o f Atlanta you w ill confer a great favor upon the people
of this surrounding territory.
I have for forty years joined in the host
of people making the City of Atlanta headquarters of commercial
trading, and expenience in this line plainly shows me the
Bank would prove a great benefit to the entire surrounding
territory, and I most earnestly urge your committee to so
vote the City of Atlanta.

Col. Robert J. Lowery,

Atlanta, Ga.
Dear Sirs:
I thank you very rush for the "Lowery 3ed" scarf
which m s received to-day tkrourh !'r. Shields.
Glad to know you reached home safely, and feel that
your trip to Knoxville charged com: letely the sentiment of the
bankers with reference to the location of the regional hank in
the South.

I really think to-day on a show down, they would

be almost unanimous for Atlanta.
T/hile, as you know, I am not in the hanking business,
I feel quite interested in having the bank located in Atlanta
instead of Cincin:.uti.

I think all business men #10 are loyal

and patriotic to the sorth should favor Atlanta as a location*

With kind regards and best wishes, I an,
Very truly yours,

RESOLUTIONS.
Whereas, the sixty-third congress of the United States
^ Baad an act known as the "fed eral reserve act*, creating not
less than eight nor more than twelve regional banks, to he located
in federal reserve c i t i e s j and
Whereas the location of these regional hanks is left
entirely with the reserve hanking organization committee, which
committee w ill naturally be guided largely by the wishes of the
frpwira and the people to be served;
Now, th erefo re, be i t resolved by the undersigned
banks, that they most respectfully ask of the reserve banking or
ganization committee the location of one of the federal regional
banks at Atlanta, G a . , that it may properly, efficiently and
quickly serve the territo ry adjacent thereto.
That in the opinion of the undersigned Atlanta is the
most logical location for th is bank for the following reasons:
1.

Atlanta is the largest City in the Southeast.

2. The great a c c e s s ib ilit y which Atlanta has on account of
being served by very many railro ads, and quick and numerous trains#
3.
Its rapid and substantial growth, large population and
increasing tax values.*
4.
Its increasing bank cle a rin g s, which far exceed those of
any other city in the Southeast.
5.
The size of the national banks located at this point, and
'the willingness of each to q ualify under the banking act passed hy
the sixty-third congress.

Hawkins, Ssq ., Manager,

*y dear Mr* Hawkins:Beplying to your & ? • ?
of January 17 th t I beg t^ a 3vise you that la
my visits to your City I have been greatly impressed with the fact that Atlanta 1b appar
ently the banking and htisiness center for %
large group of southeastern cities* and from
its bank statements# the size of its whole
sale district, and the number of railroads that
radiate from it 9 it occupies a practically
unique position in that respect compared with
the other southern olties with whioh Z ait ac
quainted •

Our own experienoe is testimony to

the same fact, and I be lie re the fact that almost
all of the large insurance companies have their
southern branches located in Atlanta demonstrates
that they fully appreciate the facilities offered
by your City.

Yours truly,

mSASCTRBR.
