While immensely pleased that you will continue at the helm, I have to say that the responsibility is so awesome and the pay so little I hate to wish such a role on you! You certainly have my heartfelt thanks for what you have gone through. http://fraser.stlouisfed.org/ Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Apropos our exchange of letters on margin requirements for securities, I read in my Sunday New York Times yesterday that the current bull market has added $750 bon of "new wealth". That's a lot of new money created -- since I perceive most people equate the value of their securities with money in the bank. Of course, a lot of this is held by pension funds, and the benearies don't get an immediate psychological lift. Anyhow, I hope you will keep control of your ability to "remove the Punch bowl" from the party via changing margin requirements. I am sure you are inundated with congratulatory notes so please feel no necessity to respond. Two notes from you on this subject is more than I deserve from one as busy as you. Good luck! My heartiest congratulations on the marvelous news that President Reagan has asked that you serve another term as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. I was in Switzerland in the summer of 1979 when your initial selection as Chairman was announced. I will never forget the feeling of great relief and outspoken enthusiasm that was expressed by all the bankers that I visited with following this announcement. Certainly the very major accomplishments which you have achieved during your first term have in every way lived up to these high expectations. As an individual and as a member of the System, I find it most reassuring and really very exciting to know that your superb talents and abilities will continue in the management of our activities for another term. Given the nature of some of the issues that face us, it will be a challenging time; however, I have every confidence that your second term will be outstandingly successful. Again, my sincere congratulations as well as best wishes for every possible success when your new term starts. Very truly yours, The Honorable Paul A. Regards, Mr. Joseph Laitin PAV:slw vs JOSEPH LAITIN CONSULTANT June 23, 1983 The Hon. Paul Volcker Chairman, Federal Reserve 20th & C Streets N.W. Washington,D.C.20551 Dear Paul, I have received a number of disturbing calls this week from newspeople asking if I were aware of the real significance of the reappointment of Paul Volcker. One of them, Rich Thomas, said his statistics show that you have now broken my record in terms of the number of Presidents you have served and the length of service as a presidential/political appointee. I have examined his statistics and am prepared to challenge them, but you are in power and I am not, and therefor it would be injudicious of me to take the matter public, but if anybody should bring it up with you, I ask only that you point out that I still hold the record for people under 6' 5" in height.
