March 9, 19U5-

Mrs. M. C. Hubbard,
Concord Place,
Chicago, Illinois.
Dear Mrs. Hubbard:
This is to acknowledge your postal card in regard to taxation. The matters you mention seem to be largely ones that present
questions of local administration. However, I should imagine that
as a representative of Mothers of America you would strongly favor
protective measures necessary to maintain our economic structure and
protect it from the severe inflationary dangers resulting from the
warTaxation is, of course, vitally necessary to reduce the
enormous surplus of buying power today in relation to the shrunken
supply of goods and services available to the public. We have not
imposed upon ourselves nearly as stringent taxation as have our
allies. I, for one, believe that government at all levels — local,
State and national — should and ought to be operated more efficiently
and economically.
I do not know what prompted your postal card, but since I
have recently suggested a special wartime capital gains tax as an
inflation control measure, it may be that you would be interested in
seeing the enclosed statement explaining the reasons why I think
this a necessary and protective measure at this time.
Sincerely yours,

M. S. Sccles,
Chairman.
