December 25, 1957* Governor Davis Chairman Eccles X thought you might be interested in seeing the attached letter which I received from Mr* O'Neal, President of the American Farm Bureau Federation, relative to the address I recently made before that organization* X personally do not feel that I got over very well to the farm group my economic thesis as to what had happened and as to what might be done about it, the principal reason being that I felt too re strained» I was afraid X might say something which the newspapers would pick up to the embarrassment of the Administration or the Board, and, therefore, I do not believe X proved to be much of a salesman* X didn*t talk with the freedom or fluency which is neces sary to do a good selling job* X felt my audience was not very much interested in the abstract economic pro blems which I discussed, and X further felt that a good deal of what X had to say was not absorbed by them. There is one compensating feature, however, and that is that they will not likely ask me to address them again very soon* Inasmuch as X appeared before this group upon your sponsorship, X am sorry that I didn*t do a better job.
