Eccles, Chairman, Federal Reserve System BOth and Constitution Ave. N.W. Washington 25, D.C. Dear M r . Eccles: The Senate Small Business Committee begins public hearings on May 8, 1945, at 10:00 A.M. in Room 357, Senate Office Building, on the Construction Industry. This industry is typically small business, well over 90% of its firms being in that class. Most of them are local in character. The Construction Industry was seriously affected by the government's wartime production program. Many businessmen have been driven from its ranks. Normally, this industry is one of the largest providers of employment in the country. We have launched these studies of the Construction Industry to assemble the pertinent facts and determine what the government can and should do to provide the right conditions so that the industry will be able to expand and develop in a healthy manner as V-E and V-J Days approach. We intend to examine the problems of the construction industry very carefully through a series of hearings which will bring together the viewpoints of business, labor and government leaders. The schedule of testimony is attached. You are cordially invited to be present. Very sincerely yours May 9, 1945. The Honorable James E . Murray, Chairman, Special Committee to Study Problems of .American Small business, United States Senate, Washington 25 > C. Dear Senator Murray: This is to thank you for your letter of May 5 advising me of the hearings which your Special Committee to Study Problems of American Small business is now holding and the schedule of witnesses. I am, of course, particularly interested in the vitally important role that the construction industry plays in this broad picture. I appreciate your invitation to be present. I have requested that our staff keep me informed with regard to the proceedings. Sincerely yours, M . S. Eccles, Chairman. ET:b
