THE CAROLINA FORUK GRAHAM BUILDING Chapel Hill, N. C. July 31, 1948 Honorable Marriner Eccles Federal Reserve Board Washington, D. C. Dear Hr. Eccles: The Carolina Forum of the University of North Carolina wishes to extend to you an invitation to speak in Chapel Hill on the present economical condition and its implications as related to further inflationand economic trouble. We should like to have you visit our campus as our guest and address the student body on some date in the autumn or winter. Your audience here at the school will be drawn from a student body of over seven thousand, a number of patrons throughout the state and possibly a national radio coverage. We cannot promise the radio coverage unless your speaking date is arranged far enough in advance. Will you kindly let me know at once what date or dates you could accept. We would prefer for you to choose a Tuesday or Thursday if you have no preference. I plan to be in Washington this coming Tuesday and Wednesday, August 3 and 4* Would it be possible for me to discuss this matter in person with you at that time? Very truly yours, THE CAROLINA FORUM Charles 0. Long Chairman G (A/ cafB August 10, 1948 Mr. Charles 0. Long, Chairman, The Carolina Forum, Graham Building, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dear Ur. Long: Your very kind letter of July 31 would have had a prompter response if I had not been so preoccupied of late with the now concluded hearings before Congress. 1 am always greatly tempted whenever it is possible to get together with the younger generation in schools and colleges because they are tomorrow's leaders and wi LI, I hope, have greater vision and comraorisense than their predecessors have sometimes exhibited. In any event, it would give me real satisfaction to speak before your student body, possibly in the middle of October if that' is agreeable.to you. I think I would prefer Thurs day, a d I am wondering if we might not tentatively set n Thursday, October 14, as a possible (late, subject to the unforeseeable circumstances that can arise to upset the best laid plans made s far in advance. A s m n that o s u i g this-would be a suitable date from your standpoint, I would make every effort to be on hand at that time. I would be glad to discuss it with you, as you suggest, in case you harroen to be in Washington in the meantime. Sincerely yours, U. S. Eccles. ET:b F p r m P. f . W ic k e r September 22, 1948 Mr* Marriner Eccles, Vice Chairman Board of Governors Federal Reserve System Washington, D* C. Dear Mr* Eccles: With regard to your coming speaking engagement at the University, there is certain information which we will need in order to complete our plans here at Chapel Hill* As I explained to you in Washington, the Forum is a student organization and, as such, we find ourselves limited in finances. We, therefore, have found it necessary to assume the policy of the organi zations which we superseded. Although we would like to, we find it impossible to pay speakers' traveling expenses to and from Chapel Hill. In coming to Chapel Hill it will be necessary to come either by train to Durham or Raleigh, or by plane to the Ralelgh-Durham Airport. At this point the Forum will meet you and conduct you to Chapel Hill where you will be entertained at our suite in the Carolina Inn. As a matter of procedure, it is our hope that we shall be able to present our speakers to a select audience prior to the regular speaking engagement* We have found in the past that this can best be accomplished through a banquet given in the honor of our speaker. If you find yourself agreeable to such a dinner, would you please notify us at your earliest convenience* It is our hope, also, that we will be able to arrange some radio coverage for your speech* Naturally, such radio coverage must be arranged in advance, and the Communication Center at the University would like to have an advance summary of your talk for the purpose of publicity throughout the state of North Carolina* Mr* Marriner E ccles - 2 - September 2 2 , 1948 The Forum would like to have the title and, If possible, the overall idea of what you will cover in your main address. If you can supply this information to us it would help us and the press of North Carolina in assuring a complete coverage of your discussion. We hope that you will find these plans agreeable, and we look forward to your arrival on October 15. Eetween now and that date I expect to be in Washington, and if you desire I would be delighted to call by your office to discuss any phase of your coming visit. With best wishes and sincerest regards from the student body of the University. Charles 0. Long, C rman Carolina Forum H. 204, Graham Memorial Chapel Hill, N. C. COLsigd September 30, 194-8. Mr. Charles 0. Long, Chairman, The Carolina Forum, Graham Building, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dear Mr. Long: Referring to your letter Vi/ashington on the Eastern Airlines 13, arriving at the Kaleigh-Durham you will arrange to meet me at the Inn, where I will stay. of September 22., I plan to leave plan at 3*15 p.m., Wednesday, October airport at U‘ U1 p.m. I understand * airport and take me to the Carolina It would be agreeable, as you suggest, to attend a dinner the evening of my arrival, where you will introduce me to a select audience prior to the speaking engagement of the following day. I hope the dinner will be informal. I wish you would advise me at what time you expect to have dinner. You did not say in your letter at what time I would address the students, nor did you say how long I would be expected to speak on Thursday, October 1A* I wish you would give me this information, as if the meeting is early enough I should like to plan to return on the 3:37 p.m. Eastern Airlines plane. I have not planned to* prepare a written speech and, therefore, it would not be* desirable to have radio coverage, as a matter of fact, I would prefer to talk off the record as I could then speak more freely and effec tively. In any case, I would not be able to furnish you any information on my speech for the purpose of advance publicity throughout the state. As to my speech, it was my plan to talk about the present inflationary situation, its cause, effects, and what can be done about it. Kindly let me know at your early convenience whether or not the plan I have outlined herein is agreeable. With reference to expenses connected with the trip, it has always been my policy not to accept honorariums, and the Federal Reserve Board pays the expenses of its members and staff incurred in connection with public speeches. I will be glad to have you get in touch with me should you be in Washington prior to October 13* Sincerely yours, M S.
