+p W A T E R STREET B O S TO N June 2 , 1939. Dear Marrlner: Fred tells me that you are planning to be in Boston for the dinner of the Alumni of Harvard Business School on Friday, June 16th. Helen and I just got back, a few days ago after nearly six weeks’ absence in the West and on the Coast. We are all settled at home now, however, and would be simply delighted if you could plan to stay with us Friday and Saturday night, catch ing the Federal Express Sunday night which v/ould land you in Washington Monday morning. We should be glad to have you bring Larry, Elliott Thurston or any one else if you wish to do so. Golf at the Country Club is just per fect now and I know you would enjoy a few days here. Of course, we should be glad to have you stay a few days longer and tour around through New England a bit if your engagements would per mit you to do so. There are many interesting places to visit in and around Boston and I should be delighted to have an opportunity to show them to you. Fred Carroll will be here at that time and we shall be able to arrange a good golf four some for you. Please try to arrange this. We want you very much and shall look forward to hearing from you as to when you will arrive and whom you will bring with you. With warmest regards, Sincerely, Mr. Marriner Eccles Washington, D. C. June 13, 1939 Mr. '»alter S. Bucklin, President The National Shawmut Bank Boston, Massachusetts Dear waiter: Pardon my delay in replying to yours of June 2d in which you so courteously invited me to stay with you this coming Friday and Saturday in connection with my address before the Harvard School of Business Alumni at the Harvard Club on Friday evening. as you know, I was away at Hot Springs with the D. C. Bankers, only returning to my office yesterday, and I now find that there is so much to be done here that I have decided to stay in Boston only for the dinner and to catch the night train back to Washington. For that reason I think it would be more convenient all around if I simply put up at a hotel, which of course would be quite near the Harvard Club. .»Iso in view of this change of plans, I am coining up alone. Even though I had four days of golf at Hot Springs, playing nine holes each morning and eighteen each afternoon, I would like very much to try my own prowess and witness yours at Brookline, itlso, it is most inviting to have you suggest that you show me some of the many in teresting places to visit in the vicinity of Boston, in particular the New England countryside which I have never seen. However, these pleasures will have to await a better opportunity and I trust that I may have a raincheck. »«ith warmest wishes to you and Helen and thanking you both for the kind invitation, I am Sincerely, M. S. Eccles, LC/fgr
