Mr. Marriner Eccles
Board of Governors
Federal Reserve System
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. Eccles:
I purposely delayed writing to you to express our appreciation
for your excellent address to our students on February 15, until 1
had an opportunity to learn the reaction of our students and faculty
members.
Practically every department on the College Park campus was
represented. That explains why so many people were turned away.
Incidentally, 654 students and faculty members were in attendance.
I received telephone calls from faculty representatives of the Agri
cultural College, Journalism, Education and Arts and Science compli
menting me for bringing you to the University. They were impressed
with the enthusiasm and sincerity of your address and were particu
larly surprised that you could keep a subject of that type at the
students’ level. The students were very enthusiastic in their class
discussions on Thursday and Friday following the talk*
I have enclosed a copy of our student paper which carries a
report of your speech. While the student reporter was rather "wild"
in some of his statements, 1 don't believe any harm will result.
Again let me thank you for this discussion.
With kindest regards,
Sincerely,

Lionel W. Thatcher,
Head of Department
