SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS
WEEKLY SUPPLEMENT
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
BUREAU OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC COMMERCE
WASHINGTON, D. C., MAY 18, 1939
SUMMARY OF BUSINESS TRENDS
"DESUMPTION
of mining in the major bituminous coal fields
-*-1- this week is expected to be followed by active operations.
Mines in some fields are still closed, but the agreements reached
have eliminated an important element of uncertainty. Reports
from large cities indicate a sizable rise in retail trade last week.
Generally, consumer purchasing was well maintained during
April and the early part of May despite unsettling developments.
Industrial activity during the first half of May was below the
April level partly by reason of the low volume of coal output.
The most recent reports from the durable-goods industries show
divergent trends with the declines in the steel and automobile
industries moving counter to developments in some other lines.
Automobile production has passed the seasonal peak and assemblies so far in May have approximated 72,000 units weekly as
compared with average assemblies of 88,000 units during April.
New orders for machine tools declined in April following the sharp
rise in March. The accompanying chart indicates the extent of
improvement in this industry during the past year; the manufacturers have a substantial backlog of orders.

Total construction contracts in April were up about seasonally
from March mainly as a result of a substantial rise in public
projects; awards were almost half again as large as a year ago,
according to the F. W. Dodge reports for 37 Eastern States.
Residential activity continued in good volume though awards
for apartment buildings were below the high March total; contracts for single-family dwellings recorded a sizable gain from
March. Awards for private construction, other than residential,
over the past few months have been moderately higher than a
year ago. However, this type of construction, in contrast to
residential building, has continued sharply below the volume in
the early months of 1937.
Recent reports from the cotton textile industry have indicated
some slackening in activity. Prices of the raw fiber have advanced
moderately over the past few weeks but print cloth quotations
have been steady. Final computations of mill consumption of
raw cotton during April reveal a decline from March, apparently
resulting from curtailment in the latter part of the month.
