The decline, the first since the first quarter of 1978, was as laroe as the dron which occurred a year ago and reflected a 0.3 percent gain in outout and a S.O percent increase in hours of all persons. In the fourth quarter of 1978, productivity increased 1.7 percent. In the nonfarm business sector, productivity decreased 4.2 percent, as output increased 1.0 percent and hours gained 5.4 percent. This vras also the first drop in nonfarm business productivity since the first quarter of 1973, and the largest decline since the second quarter of 1974, In manufacturinn, productivity fell 2.S percent in the first quarter of 1979; output increased 5.2 percent and hours rose 8.3 percent. The decline v/as the first since the 5.1 percent drop in the first quarter of 1973 and was confined to the durables goods sector. In the fourth quarter of 1978, productivity increased 1.7 percent in manufacturing. First ouarter measures are suminarlzed in table A; details are niven in tables 1-6.
