b u s i n e s s on M a y 17, 1918.
RESERVES: T o t a l g o l d r e s e r v e s show a g a i n of 11.3 m i l l i o n s . S u b s t a n t i a l
g a i n s i n g o l d r e s e r v e s a r e r e p o r t e d by the Boston, Cleveland, Chicago and S t . L o u i s
banks, l a r g e l y t h e r e s u l t of s h i f t i n g of c r e d i t s i n t h e Gold S e t t l e m e n t Fund in
c o n n e c t i o n w i t h L i b e r t y Loan o p e r a t i o n s , A d e c r e a s e of about 2J m i l l i o n s i n the

Some i n d i c a t i o n of t h e c h a r a c t e r and volume of investment and 1oan o p e r a t i o n s
of 693 member banks i n about 100 l e a d i n g c i t i e s in c o n n e c t i o n with t h e consumation
of the h i r d L i b e r t y Loan i s a f f o r d e d by the weekly s t a t e m e n t showing c o n d i t i o n
of t h e s e banks a s a t c l o s e of b u s i n e s s on May 10.
Total United S t a t e s S e c u r i t i e s on hand show a n e t d e c r e a s e f o r t h e week of
almost 50 m i l l i o n s , an i n c r e a s e of 309 m i l l i o n s i n t h e a g g r e g a t e h o l d i n g s of
U. b . bonds, o t h e r than c i r c u l a t i o n bonds, being more than o f f s e t by n e t l i q u i d a t i o n of 3 6 I & I m i l l i o n s of C e r t i f i c a t e s of I n d e b t e d n e s s . Loans s u p p o r t e d by U.S.
war s e c u r i t i e s show a r i s e f o r t h e week of l y i . S m i l l i o n s , w h i l e o t h e r l o a n s and
investments i n c r e a s e d by 105-5 m i l l i o n s . For t h e 120 banks i n the t h r e e c e n t r a l
r e s e r v e c i t i e s c o r r e s p o n d i n g changes involve a d e c r e a s e of 4 7 . 4 m i l l i o n s in
t o t a l U. S. s e c u r i t i e s , an i n c r e a s e of 172,2 m i l l i o n s i n U. S. bonds o t h e r than
c i r c u l a t i o n bonds, and a d e c r e a s e of 219*6 m i l l i o n s i n C e r t i f i c a t e s , Loans
supported by Government war s e c u r i t i e s r e p o r t e d by t h e s e 120 banks show an i n c r e a s e of 119 m i l l i o n s and o t h e r l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s - a n i n c r e a s e of 3 5 , 8
m i l l i o n s . Aggregate l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of r e p o r t i n g banks show a n i n c r e a s e
of 227.5 m i l l i o n s , of which 107.3 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s t h e i n c r e a s e a t t h e C e n t r a l
