. . . RETAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR K6RCH 1909

F u r n i t u r e s t o r e s a l e s showed a seasonal expansion i n Karch, b u t
•were. 13 p e r cent less^ than a: year e a r l i e r . • The i n c r e a s e over February
r e f l e c t e d moderate gains i n cash and charge-account t r a n s a c t i o n s , and a
r i s e of n e a r l y o n e - f o u r t h i n instalment s a l e s . Both cash and c r e d i t s a l e s
•rare smaller than a year ago, t h e declines var^ang from 21 per cent f o r
cash s a l e s t o 12 per c e n t and 13 per cent f o r i n s t a l m e n t and charge-account
sales, respectively.
Instalment accounts r e c e i v a b l e continued to d e c l i n e , but showed a
16 per cent gain over a year e a r l i e r . C o l l e c t i o n s on instalment accounts
vrere up one-tenth from the February l e v e l and, when r e l a t e d to accounts
outstanding on Larch 1 , r e s u l t e d in a c o l l e c t i o n r a t i o of lU per c e n t ; f o r
the preceding two months the r a t i o had been 12 per c e n t . At the p r e v a i l i n g
r a t e of c o l l e c t i o n , accounts would be outs Landing n e a r l y lit months.
I n v e n t o r i e s increased 3 per cent i n l a r c h , but T e r e 7 per cent
smaller than on the corresponding date of 19^3. At the end o f the month
the merchandise i n stock uas about equal t o f i v e ).;or.tl:s' supply a t the
c u r r e n t r a t e of s a l e .
