RETAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR JANUARY 1943

R e t a i l f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s a l e s i n January showed more than the
usual seasonal decline from December, r e f l e c t i n g s u b s t a n t i a l decreases
i n a l l types of t r a n s a c t i o n s , and were 8 per cent smaller than i n
January 1942. Cash s a l e s in January continued i n much l a r g e r volume
than a year ago, -while instalment s a l e s and charge account s a l e s were
considerably below the year a30 l e v e l s . In January 1943 instalment s a l e s
accounted f c r 65 per cent of the t o t a l as compared with 70 per cent i n
January 1942. During t h i s period cash s a l e s have become an i n c r e a s i n g l y
important p a r t of the t o t a l .
I n v e n t o r i e s declined s l i g h t l y in January but were 4 per cent
above those a t the end of January a year ago• Inventories now amount
t o seven and one-half months' supply a t the c u r r e n t low r a t e of s a l e as
compared with s i x months' supply in January 1942.
Instalment accounts r e c e i v a b l e declined 8 per cent in January
and a t the end of the month were 37 per cent below those f o r the c o r r e sponding date l a s t y e a r . C o l l e c t i o n s on instalment accounts showed
decreases of 9 per cent and 6 per cent fjrom a month ago and a year ago,
r e s p e c t i v e l y . The r a t i o of c o l l e c t i o n s in January t o instalment accounts
receivable on the f i r s t of the month was 17 per c e n t , compared with 18
per cent in December and 12 per cent in January 1942 .
