RETAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR MAY 19^9

F u r n i t u r e s t o r e s a l e s which u s u a l l y i n c r e a s e s e a s o n a l l y i n May
were 9 p e r c e n t above the A p r i l volume. The April-to-May i n c r e a s e s i n
both cash and c r e d i t s a l e s were somewhat l a r g e r than i n the corresponding
p e r i o d of 19l|8. Cash and charge-account s a l e s were down about o n e - f i f t h
from the volume of a year e a r l i e r , w h i l e i n s t a l m e n t s a l e s d e c l i n e d 5
per c e n t over t h e y e a r - p e r i o d . T o t a l s a l e s were 10 p e r c e n t below t h e
year-ago l e v e l .
I n s t a l m e n t accounts r e c e i v a b l e i n c r e a s e d s l i g h t l y i n May, and
continued w e l l above t h e amount o u t s t a n d i n g a year e a r l i e r . C o l l e c t i o n s
on i n s t a l m e n t a c c o u n t s , which u s u a l l y show a r i s e i n L:ay, were 2 p e r c e n t
l e s s t h a n i n A p r i l . N e v e r t h e l e s s , t h e r a t i o of c o l l e c t i o n s t o accounts
r e c e i v a b l e on t h e f i r s t of t h e month was unchanged a t 13 per c e n t . At t h e
p r e v a i l i n g r a t e of repayment, accounts would be o u t s t a n d i n g about f o u r t e e n
and o n e - h a l f months.
I n v e n t o r i e s d e c l i n e d f u r t h e r i n Kay, and were o n e - t e n t h below
t h e r e t a i l v a l u e of s t o c k on hand a year a g o . On Uay 31» s t o c k s were
equal t o about f o u r months' supply a t t h e c u r r e n t r a t e of s a l e .
